Mr. Eddie Wallace Matthew, 85 of Siler City passed on Monday, June 19, 2017 at his home in Lawerance, GA.
Eddie Wallace Matthews (known to most as Wallace) was born on February 12, 1932 to Guy Matthews and Virginia Marley Strickland Matthews. He graduated from Chatham County Training School and immediately entered the work force. He was soon drafted in the United States Army. He was a Korean Veteran and upon returning to the states he served on burial detail at fort Bragg, North Carolina (1952-1954). He left the Military after a tour of duty and learned the trade of brick masonry from his grandfather, Roy Strickland. Not satisfied with this career choice, Wallace decided to re-enlist in the Army. His second tour of duty took him to Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland and Africa. His second tour of duty was from 1956-1959.
After returning home, he began working in brick masonry again, but soon left to work for a few companies such as Elder Printing, GE and Robbins and Gant. His final place of employment and the company that he retired from was the Eveready Battery Company in Asheboro, NC.
Wallace joined First Missionary Baptist Church at an early age. He served in many capacities such as President of the Senior Choir, past President of the Usher Board, past Sunday School Teacher and Chairman of the Trustee Board as well as serving as a Deacon. He served as past President of the Baptist Training Union for the Deep River Union, past Vice Commander for the Moffitt Pool American Legion Post #277, he was a member of the Knights of Pythagoras (Mason) and served his community by being on Siler City Planning Board.
Wallace married the former Annie Lee Womble of Goldston, NC in 1962. To this union, one child, Iris E. Matthews was born. Wallace leaves behind two daughters, Iris E. Matthews and Brenda Hines McCrimmon of Carthage, NC; son Tony Marsh (Lisa) of Bear Creek, NC; sisters Carolyn Taylor of Washington, DC and Jewel Woodard of Orlando, Florida and sisters-in-law, Betty C. Matthews of Siler City, NC
