Ms. Verlene (Davis) Burks, age 88, of Sanford, North Carolina, entered eternal rest on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Peak Resource Center in Carthage, North Carolina.
Obituary
Ms. Verlene (Davis) Burks was born on July 10, 1937, in Harnett County, North Carolina. She was child number seven of eleven children born to the late Mr. Tom and Mrs. Esther Davis.
She attended Ridgeway Elementary School and W.B. Wicker High School in Sanford, North Carolina.
Verlene grew up attending Love Grove AME Zion Church along with the rest of her family. She worked at Jonesboro Cleaners in Sanford, North Carolina for many years.
Her first marriage was to Mr. James Harvey Tyson and to this union one son, Roger Tyson was born.
She later married Walter L. Burks on August 10, 1972.
Verlene was a fun, loving person. She enjoyed playing bingo, bowling, and lots of arts and crafts. Traveling and going on family cruises were also things that she enjoyed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Burks; three brothers, Johnny, Thomas Jr., and Aubrey Davis; and two sisters, Annie and Barbara Davis.
Verlene leaves to cherish her precious memories one son, Roger Tyson (Sheila McCullum); three grandchildren, Teirra Tyson Watson (Steven) of Pennsylvania, Dama Tuck of Sanford, North Carolina, and Taphon Tyson of Baltimore, Maryland; seven great-grandchildren, C.E. Watson, Seiya Watson, Stevie Watson, London West, Landen West, Dominic Tuck, and Jalen Tuck; five siblings, Ellis Davis, Norman Davis (Eulah), Gerard Davis (Peggy), Waymon Davis, and Bettie Davis, all of Sanford, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Marie Taylor (Richard); a special friend/bingo buddy, Linda Stradford; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
