Mrs. Shirley "Zelma" Martin Smith, age 77 of Broadway, NC entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at First Health Hospice and Palliative Care in West End, NC.
Zelma Shirley Ann Smith was born August 31, 1945, in Sanford, North Carolina to the late Clarence Trusell and Minnie Lee Smith.
Zelma was married 35 years to the late Charles Lester Smith on June 29, 1968, in Bennetsville, South Carolina. They were the loving parents to five daughters and three sons.
Zelma was a faithful member at Saint Mark United Church of God for over 50 years. She served faithfully as a Sunday School Teacher; President of the Missionary and Usher Board; Choir
Member; and anywhere she could help. She was employed at Cornell Dubilier for 26 years and at Zurn Industries for 23 years.
Zelma is preceded in death by her late husband Charles Lester Smith; her daughter: Linda Carol Smith; her step-daughters Carolyn McCutchen, and Lisa Quick; her mother Minnie Lee
Smith; her father Clarence Trusell; her sisters: Linda Fay Martin and Devolar McLean; her brothers: Ernest McLean, William Smith, Jimmy Smith, and Henry Jay McLean.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her sons and daughters, Clarence (Diane) Russell Smith of Sanford, North Carolina, Lester Junior Smith of Sanford, North Carolina, Cynthia (Arthur) Bishop
of Hephzibah, Georgia and Sherry (Keith) Clinton of Jessup, Georgia, and Charles Harold Smith of Broadway, North Carolina; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; brothers, James McLean of Sanford, North Carolina and Percy (Stella) McLean of Broadway, North Carolina; sister, Edna Ellis, Washington, DC; sisters-in-laws, Treva (late Ernest) McLean of Sanford, North Carolina and Joanne McCormick of Olivia, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Michael J. Smith, Rome, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends that love her dearly.
The family will receive friends Thursday and Friday from 3 pm to 7 pm at 635 Vernon Street, Broadway, NC.
