Obituary
Sandra Faye Lee McLaughlin, 66, of Clinton, North Carolina, peacefully transitioned on April 14, 2026, at The Magnolia Assisted Living Facility following a decline in health due to a stroke.
Sandra was born on February 11, 1960. She was lovingly adopted and raised as an only child by Lewis James Lee and Hazel Lee, while also being the biological daughter of Eugene Stroud and Mabel Burns. Although her family extended beyond her immediate household, her upbringing was shaped by the love and care of her adoptive parents.
Sandra spent her early years in Washington, DC, where she attended Seaton Elementary School, Shaw Junior High School, and later graduated from Cardozo High School in 1978. During her time in high school, she expressed her love for music by playing the clarinet in the school band. She went on to further her education at the University of the District of Columbia, where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.
Sandra dedicated over 30 years of her life to shaping young minds as an educator. She taught preschool through kindergarten in Washington, DC at Van Ness Elementary School and later continued her teaching career in Harnett County Schools in North Carolina at Lillington Shawtown. Known for her nurturing spirit, she built meaningful relationships with her students and their families, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives. She retired in August 2021 after a long and fulfilling career.
Outside of her profession, Sandra had a vibrant personality and a love for life. She enjoyed fashion and shopping, taking long rides to try new restaurants, and listening to her favorite old-school R&B music. She had a generous heart and found joy in giving to others, always making sure her family and friends had what they needed. Above all, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren, who brought her immense pride and happiness.
Sandra was married three times throughout her life: first to Henry Allen in Washington, DC; later to Robert West, who preceded her in death on May 2, 2019; and then to William Earl McLaughlin, who preceded her in death on August 30, 2021.
Sandra was preceded in death by her husbands, Robert West and William Earl McLaughlin; one brother, Javoghn; and her parents, Lewis James Lee, Hazel Lee, Eugene Stroud, and Mabel Burns.
She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Taurice Lee and Nefertari Butler; one son-in-law, James Butler; beloved grandchildren, Auriyana Aguilar, Quiara Aguilar, Jamir Butler, Jhene Butler, and Jahir Butler; great-grandchildren, Calix Aguilar and Caliah Aguilar. She is also survived by her siblings, James Burns, Barbara, Daryl, Rene, Sharon, Gary, Tonya, and Tara.
Sandra’s legacy is one of love, generosity, and dedication to family and community. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved her.
