Rudolph Stone

Rudolph Stone, age 84 of Pittsboro, North Carolina transitioned into eternal rest, Monday, May 31, 2021, in Durham, NC.

Mr. Rudolph Stone, son of the late Thomas and Massie Stone, was born in Chatham County, North Carolina on August 6, 1936. He departed this life on Monday, May 31, 2021, in the comfort of his home. 

Rudolph was a member of Mt. Sinai A.M.E Church in Pittsboro, NC. He graduated from Horton High in 1956 and was a gifted athlete. Rudolph participated in football and baseball. He received numerous accolades for both. While known throughout Chatham County for his speed and agility on the football field, he was also the life of the party and loved to dance. Rudolph Stone’s humor was always evident, as he never hesitated to tell you, his opinion. No matter how one came to meet him, you could never leave his presence without experiencing laughter. Anyone that encountered Rudolph would agree, his presence was unforgettable.

He retired from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with 30 years of service. Once retired, he became an avid golfer. He played golf every day except Wednesday…this was his day off. He also participated in annual golf tournaments in North Carolina and other states.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Stone of almost 50 years. Left to cherish many, many loving memories are his children: David Rudolph Burnette (Burlington, NC), Vickie Edwards (Chapel Hill, NC), and Cheryl Denise Cureton (Michael) of Durham, NC; Siblings: Fulton Headen (Pittsboro, NC), George Stone (Forestville, MD) and Dalton Stone (Pittsboro, NC); Brother-in-law: Lenon Brooks (Pittsboro, NC). He also leaves five grandchildren; Taiwana Burnette (Pittsboro, NC), Jermaine Evans (Pittsboro, NC), Moriah Cureton (Durham, NC), Zaquetta Henderson (Mebane, NC) and David Cureton (Durham, NC); Four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
