With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Rowland Cotten, born February 11, 1951, who entered eternal rest at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, NC on December 8, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family. A man of steadfast faith, quiet strength, and unwavering perseverance, he met life’s challenges with courage, grace, and dignity.
Rowland attended JS Waters Elementary and Chatham Central High School, laying the foundation for a life marked by hard work, determination, and a commitment to his community.
He was a dedicated and skilled landscaper, renowned for his ability to transform the earth into places of beauty. While his hands shaped the land, his heart shaped the lives of those fortunate enough to know him. He approached every task with diligence, integrity, and pride, leaving a lasting mark through his hard work.
A man of deep compassion and warmth, Rowland possessed a gentle heart and a joyful, light-hearted sense of humor that brought laughter and comfort to friends and family. Even in the face of multiple health challenges, he remained resilient, courageous, and firmly rooted in faith, never allowing adversity to diminish his kindness, hope, or generosity. His life was a testament to strength, humility, and perseverance.
Rowland was preceded in death by his father, Harold Charlie; his mother, Annie Mae; his brother, Nathaniel; and his sisters, Glenda and Lucille.
He is survived by his three children, Tina (Dwight), Tonia (Clifford), and Rayvon (Tahisia); six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Rowland is also survived by his sisters, Lynda, Brenda, and Gayla (Louis); his brother, Raymond; one sister-in-law, Sarah; and brothers-in-law, Joe, Lewis, and Winfred (deceased). He was cherished by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends, all of whom were touched by his generosity, wisdom, and unwavering love.
The family extends their sincere gratitude to all who provided care and support. Rowland leaves behind a legacy of faith, love, and devotion that will endure through the generations, and he will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
