Mr. Ronald “Ronnie” Atwater, born on August 13, 1957, in Durham, North Carolina, entered into eternal rest on November 2, 2025. He was the beloved son of the late Eugene Atwater and Martha Atwater Barbee.
Ronnie’s life was defined by his extraordinary passion for music. From the age of 10, he began playing the drums—a gift that would lead him on a lifelong journey of rhythm, creativity, and joy. Early in his musical journey, Ronnie helped shape the beginnings of Chapel Hill’s (NC) acclaimed Liquid Pleasure band as its original drummer and one of its founding members. His remarkable talent and unwavering dedication to his craft earned him numerous honors, including the prestigious Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, as well as the Golden Key to the City of Chapel Hill in recognition of his outstanding musical achievements. Ronnie was also honored to be accepted into the world-renowned United States Collegiate Wind Band.
Ronnie was a proud graduate of the Chapel Hill High School class of 1975, where he was a standout percussionist in the school band. He went on to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he earned his certification in instrumental performance. Ronnie’s musical career spanned decades and across continents. A veteran drummer, vocalist, and music teacher, he performed and recorded with countless pop, rock, jazz, and reggae artists, sharing his gift with audiences around the world.
For much of his adult life, Ronnie made his home in Hawaii, where he continued to inspire others through his teaching and performances. His passion for rhythm, infectious smile, and warm spirit touched the hearts of all who knew him.
Ronnie leaves to cherish his memory his son, Muktananda Atwater (Katrina); his grandchildren, Suriah and Dashon; his siblings, Judi Atwater Pierce (Robert), Eugene Atwater, and Steve Atwater; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who loved him dearly
Ronnie’s life was one long drum solo—dynamic, soulful, and unforgettable. Each beat he played told a story, and though his sticks may rest, the rhythm he created will echo forever in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
