Reverend Dr. Joseph Morgan Obituary

Reverend Dr. Joseph Louis Morgan, age 87, of West End, NC, formerly of Sanford, NC, entered eternal rest on Saturday, January 6, 2024.

“I am not tired of my work, neither am I tired of the world; yet, when Christ calls me home, I shall go with gladness:” ~ Adorniram Judson.

Dr. Joseph Louis Morgan departed this earthly life on January 6, 2024, at the Greens at Pinehurst.  He was born on August 4, 1936, in Chatham County North Carolina to the late Susie Morgan Bynum.

He attended elementary school in Chatham County and high school in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1954.  Reverend Morgan then enrolled at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy in 1958.  He continued his education at Shaw Divinity School in Raleigh, North Carolina where he assisted Dr. John Manly at First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina and preached his first sermon on July 13, 1958, and received his Master of Divinity in 1961.  While in Divinity School, he was the president of the National Theological Alumni Association.  He was ordained November 15, 1960, by the New Hope Association in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  In 1983, Shaw University School of Divinity bestowed Dr. Morgan with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree.  Dr. Morgan served as pastor of New Light Baptist Church, in Hallsboro, North Carolina; Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Wendell, North Carolina, and First Baptist Church in Dallas, North Carolina.  In 1964, Dr. Morgan became pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church (formally Wall Street Baptist Church) where he served as pastor for 38 years, retiring in 2000.  On November 12, 2012, Dr. Morgan was bestowed Pastor Emeritus of First Calvary Baptist Church.  After retiring, Dr. Morgan continued to pastor as an interim pastor at several churches in the area, Orange Grove Baptist Church and Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Durham, North Carolina, Martin Street Baptist Church, Raleigh, North Carolina, and Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Chapel Hill, North Carolina before retiring completely in 2015.

During the integration of the public schools in Lee County in the late1960’s Dr. Morgan was asked to teach English on a voluntary basis and later hired at Sanford Central High School after completing Teacher Certification at Fayetteville State University.  His presence on the campus helped ease racial tensions at a critical time in the county’s history.  After several years in the public school system, he joined Central Carolina Community College administration as the Associate Dean of the Evening Program.  In 2000 he retired after 25 years of service to the community college system.

Dr. Morgan was active in the community and involved in the social and religious realms of his community.  He was a member of the local, state, and national Baptist Conventions.  He was a member of the Sanford Ministerial Fellowship, the Lee County Council on Aging, Board member Emeritus of First Citizens Bank, Life Member of the NAACP, Jonesboro Rotary, Lee County Citizen of the Year, and many other civic organizations.

Dr. Morgan was preceded in death by his half- brother Authur Lee Alston.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 61 years Caroldine Leake Morgan; daughters, Sharon Morgan Brown (Stanley) and Susan Morgan; two grandsons, Morgan Stanley Brown (Anna) and Daniel Weldon Brown (Aviance); two great grandsons, Aubrey Kai Brown and Davis Joseph Brown; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
