Raymond Henry Smith

Mr. Raymond Henry Smith, age 81 of Sanford, NC transitioned to eternal rest on Monday, August 5, 2024, at his residence.

The Obituary

Raymond H. Smith was the first son of Raymond Calvin and Hazel Mae Smith. He grew up in Burgaw, North Carolina.

After graduating from Pender County Training School, his education continued by becoming a master barber through Harris Barber College (Raleigh, NC). He was discovered and was offered a position by Mr. Fred Thompson and Mr. Moses McMillan. He accepted and moved to Sanford, NC.

Love was quickly found after meeting Ms. Margie Henderson, a local schoolteacher. After some time passing, they both agreed to marry on August 1, 1965. In 1968, the only child, Raymond Vincent Smith, was born.

Sanford is full of impressions that remain. Smitty & Leo’s Beauty and Barber Center has become a landmark that many have shared since 1983. Impressions continue within the choir and other organizations within Fair Promise AME Zion Church in which Mr. Smith had been a member since 1960. Impressions continue within Prince Hall Masonry in which he earned the rankings of a 33rd Degree Mason and served as Past Master, Past Commander-In-Chief, and Honorary Past Potentate, providing charitable community actions throughout his tenure.

Raymond H. Smith is survived by his wife, Margie; son, Ray (Norma); grandchildren, Khalil and Iyani; two sisters, Jackie and Louise; one brother, Larry; one niece, Sharelle; one nephew, Larry; and a host of cousins and friends.

May his legacy continue to be honored within the thoughts and memories of this tremendous community pillar!
