Prentiss Davis Obituary

Mr. Prentiss Waylon Davis, age 79 of Sanford, NC transitioned into eternal rest on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Cape Fear Valley Hospital in Fayetteville, NC.

Our beloved Prentiss Waylon Davis was born on July 21, 1943, to the late Herbert Davis and the late Gladys Prince Davis Williams in Harnett County, North Carolina.

Prentiss attended school in Lee County, North Carolina, and later relocated from North Carolina to Connecticut and then New York to establish his occupation and family.

After his retirement as a truck driver, Prentiss moved back to North Carolina to the township of Sanford. He rejoined the church he grew up in, Cameron Grove A.M.E. Zion Church, Broadway, North Carolina, under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Kenneth L. Swann. Prentiss was active in various ministries of the church – the “Lighthouse” Small Group Ministry, Senior Usher Board, Men of Zion, the Connectional Lay Council, and Senior Adult Christian Education.  As his health began declining, Prentiss continued in private worship at home, receiving the Sacrament of Communion from his pastor.

While living in New Rochelle, New York, Prentiss became a member of Xavier Lodge #50.  He changed his membership to Advance Lodge #217 in Lillington after moving back to North Carolina. In his spare time, Prentiss loved to bowl as he was an avid bowler and loved going out to eat breakfast.

Prentiss was called to his eternal resting place to be with the Lord on Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center in Fayetteville, North Carolina, to be with those who preceded him in death, which included his parents, his son, Minister Keith Waylon Davis, and his siblings - Mary Saunders, Charles Davis, and Benjamin Davis.

Prentiss leaves to cherish his memories: two daughters, Kevia Davis of Waterbury, Connecticut, and Carla Davis of Wheaton, Maryland; two sons, Kevin Davis (Ursula) of Norwalk, Connecticut, and Loren Davis (Latonya) of White Plains, Maryland; his sister, Christine Polite of Glenn Dale, Maryland; brother-in-law, Glenn Saunders (Betty Person) of Cameron, North Carolina; sister-in-law, Carolyn Davis of New Haven, Connecticut; three aunts, Helena McCormick of Lemon Springs, North Carolina, Ielena Yarborough (Louis) and Vernell Simmons (Arthur) of Broadway, North Carolina; one uncle, Paul Prince of Bridgeport, Connecticut; seven grandchildren,  Devyn, Kristiana and Alieghia-Michelle Wilson, Kylia Dunbar, Shaun and Shayla Davis, and Jadon and Janiyah Davis; a supportive nephew, Sorrell Saunders (Selina); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and friends.
