Peter Smith Obituary

Peter Mullen Smith, Harvard ’61, Ph.D. ’70, of Pennington, New Jersey, passed away peacefully in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on November 8, 2024, at the age of 83. He was born on May 27, 1941.

A graduate of The Lawrenceville School (Class of 1958) and Harvard College, Peter went on to study at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1962–63, 1965–66), participating in landmark archaeological excavations at Pylos with Carl Blegen (1963) and at Porto Cheli with Michael Jameson (1968). He earned his Ph.D. in Classics from Harvard University in 1970.

His scholarly work explored the intersections of human cognitive development with evolving ancient Greek conceptions of time, coincidence, causality, and necessity, as expressed in early epic poetry, classical drama, and pre-Socratic philosophy. These themes are honored in Resemblance and Reality in Greek Thought (2017), a volume of essays published in tribute to his intellectual legacy.

Peter was a gifted and deeply devoted educator, teaching at Indiana University, Columbia University, Bryn Mawr College, and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is remembered for his warm presence, intellectual rigor, and genuine care for students across all levels of learning. His teaching and mentorship reflected his enduring belief in the virtues of the Classical tradition—excellence, inquiry, community, and moral integrity.

A lifelong learner, Peter delighted in traveling across Europe, Canada, Korea, and the northeastern United States, especially in Greece, where he spent many cherished springs and summers in Sifnos and Poulithra. In retirement, he embraced sailing, cared for a classic wooden boat, and pursued the Argentine tango.

Peter was a proud father and grandfather, a beloved teacher and mentor, and a cherished colleague and friend. He is survived by his wife, Rebekah; his children, Karl and Susannah, and their mother; and his granddaughter, Tara.

Following his wishes, memorial contributions may be made to Médecins Sans Frontières, the American Civil Liberties Union, or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
