Minister Naomi Harris, age 65 of Sanford, NC, transitioned into eternal rest on Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at her residence.
The Obituary
Minister Naomi Covington Harris was born on August 9, 1957, to the late Charles Albert and Nannie Ellerby Covington in Lee County, NC. She was the youngest of six children. She transitioned to her heavenly home on February 28, 2023, at her residence at 90 Toomer Lane, Sanford, NC.
Minister Harris grew up in Lee County, Sanford, NC and attended Deep River High School. She attended Central Carolina Community College and received her certificate in Cosmetology. During her early years, she was employed by several companies in the Sanford area. She was a hair stylist during the 1990’s until her health declined and she had to stop working. For the past 25+ years, she was a housewife. She met her beloved husband, Derrick, in 1994 and they were married on June 6, 1996. They would have celebrated 25 years of marital bliss this June.
Minister Harris received her early teaching from Ward Memorial Church in Sanford, NC. Several years later, she joined Coats Chapel Baptist Church in Coats, NC. For the past 15 years, she was a faithful member at the House of Prayer Fellowship Church in Goldston, NC, under the leadership of her oldest sister, Pastor Annie Glover. She was a member of the House of Prayer Gospel Choir and was a praise and worship leader. Minister Harris loved the Lord with all of her heart and soul. Her favorite saying was, “I’m still standing on God’s word.” Even through her sickness, she never gave up and kept the faith. She fought a good fight and finished the course.
Minister Harris was affectionately called Yomi by her nieces and nephews. She was a fashionista and loved to dress and stand out in the crowd. She also loved decorating her home, inside and out. Most importantly, she loved her husband, children, and grandchildren, and enjoyed family gatherings. She had a beautiful smile, an infectious laugh, and loved to have fun.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Glenn Walker (whom she raised as her own); brother-in-law: James Thomas “aka Sweetie” and sister-in-law: Pam Covington.
She leaves to cherish her precious memories, her faithful and devoted husband, Derrick “aka Bay”; five children: Ricky Walker of Sanford, NC (whom she raised as her own); Beatrice Gray (Javon) of Powder Springs, GA; Nathan Covington of Sanford, NC, Gwen Harrington (Joseph) of Charlotte, NC, and Tiffany Waring (Christopher) of Sanford, NC; eight grandchildren: Javon, Alexus Kayla, JayQuan, Gianni, Joanna, Jayden, Joseph, Jimmy; one great-grandson: Javon; five siblings: Pastor Annie Glover (Melvin) of Siler City, NC, Alfred Covington of Windsor, CT, Irene Caldwell (Coley) of Sanford, NC; Shirlene Thomas (her road partner) of New Hill, NC; Nannie Taylor (Harold) of Moncure, NC; four sisters-in-law: Rosalyn Moffitt of Sanford, NC, Pamela Foxx of Sanford, NC, Kim Baldwin (Harold) of Pittsboro, NC; Renee Harris (Wayne) of Sanford, NC, two brothers-in-law: Patrick Harris (Beverly) of Greensboro, NC and Bruce Harris of Philadelphia, PA; two aunts: Helen McIvery of Southern Pines, NC, Mary Frances Quick (James) of Glenarden, MD; two uncles: Hubert and Herbert Covington (Beulah) of Hartford, CT; a special cousin, Amanda Hinds; a long-time special friend, Elder Beatrice Smith. She has a host of loving nieces, nephews and many other relatives and friends.
