Mildred Rebecca (Douglas) Hill

Mildred Rebecca Hill, age 93 of Moncure, NC transitioned into eternal rest Monday, January 11, 2021, at her residence.

Mildred Rebecca Douglas Hill, daughter of the late Thomas Henry Douglas and Isabella Womble Bazzell, was born July 23, 1927, in Chatham County, NC.  She transitioned into eternal rest at her home in Moncure, NC on January 11, 2021.

Mildred attended the Haywood Public School and she graduated from Horton High School in 1945.  She joined Liberty Chapel Church at an early age; she served in various positions during that time including as a Trustee, Usher, and member of the Senior Choir and Sunday School Treasurer.

She worked for many years at Webster’s Poultry Plant after which she worked in the Senior Citizens Program at the Moncure-Haywood Multipurpose Center until it closed. She then moved on to become the chief cashier at Ray’s Super Market.  While there she earned a write-up in the county newspaper for her kindness to the customers, including many truckers who visited the store daily, and her ever-present smile.

Mildred was a member of the C. Wesley Samuels Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star #664 and she was also a member of the East Chatham Senior Citizens.  She gave birth to two children but many people in the surrounding community considered her to be their mother.  That has been a constant refrain in the many calls and visits the family has received.  She was always willing to give a smile and a helping hand to anyone who needed her.  Many times, they did not have to call her, she would just hear about someone in need and she would reach out to them.  She never ever met a stranger; after a few minutes in her presence, you were drawn in.  Mildred was an excellent cook and she particularly loved to bake for which she received rave reviews. Mildred loved to travel; anytime the wheels were rolling she was in the number. We thank God that she was able to enjoy her surprise 93rd drive-by birthday celebration in July. Many people in Moncure and the surrounding communities participated to show her how much she was truly loved.     

She was preceded in death by her parents, her loving husband, James W. Hill, her brothers Thomas Allen Douglas and David Womble, and her sister Beatrice Newton.

She leaves to cherish precious memories, two daughters; Brenda Horton (Charles) of Clinton, MD and Marilyn Hill of Moncure, NC, two grandsons; Corey Hill (Angela) of Durham, NC  and Jared Horton of Baltimore, MD, two great-grandchildren; Marcus and Ariana Hill of Durham, NC, two sisters; Jean Bazzell of Springdale, MD and Dorothy Howard of Newark, DE, three nieces; Shirley Hicks of Waldorf, MD, Linda McIver of Alpharetta, GA and Rhonda Hanna of Springdale, MD, two nephews; James Howard IV of Bowie, MD and Samuel Hanna of College Park, MD, several great-nieces, and great-nephews, six godsons; Rev. Benjamin Whitlock, Charles Raines, Iven Dark, John Smith, William Taylor (cousin) and Charles Spears, two goddaughters; Rev. Elsie Whitlock and Darlene Taylor, one god granddaughter; Jade Womble, and one god grandson; Javian Smith.  She also leaves a host of other relatives and friends, including close friends Delois Samuels, Myrtle Fuqua, Robena McCrimmon, and Annie Bell Toomer.  Also, her Furbaby, Tigger.
