Obituary
Marvin Lynn “Buddy” Campbell
Marvin Lynn Campbell, affectionately known as “Buddy,” was born on August 6, 1958, in Harnett County, North Carolina, to the late Annie Campbell Ross and the late Eark Freeman Ross. Marvin grew up in the close-knit Norrington community, where he learned early the values of family, hard work, and resilience. He was the second of five children and carried a quiet strength that would follow him throughout his life.
Marvin attended school in the Harnett County School System and graduated with the Class of 1977. He continued his education at Central Carolina Community College, earning several specialized trainings and certifications, including EKG and other medical-related coursework. Marvin worked faithfully at Collins & Aikman in Siler City for over 15 years until the company’s closing. Shortly after, he began working in the maintenance department with Chatham County, where he eventually retired after years of dedicated service.
On September 20, 1987, Marvin married the love of his life, Marilyn Scriven Campbell. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in partnership, faith, and family.
Marvin was a man of many passions, especially in his later years. At age 60, he rekindled a love for motorcycles—earning his bike license and purchasing a Harley-Davidson. It wasn’t unusual to see him riding to work, to church, to community events, or cruising alongside his daughters, son-in-law, and grandson. Riding brought him joy and freedom.
He loved fishing trips with his wife and children, working long hours in his yard, and traveling whenever the mood struck. If Marvin and Marilyn received an invitation, you could count on them showing up with gifts in hand, smiles on their faces, and love in their hearts.
As a child, Marvin grew up attending Norrington AME Zion Church with his family. After marriage, he transferred his membership to First Church of Christ, where he served faithfully as a Trustee for many years. He later completed his service to the Lord at Deliverance Church of Christ, where he served on the Deacon Board, stood devotedly as The Bishop’s Armour Bearer, and proudly served as president of the Usher Board.
Marvin was preceded in death by his father, Eark Freeman Ross; his mother, Annie Campbell Ross; and his sister, Shirley Mentoria Dunn.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of 38 years, Marilyn; his daughters — Monica Matthews (Reginald), Latonya Jones (Maurice), and Latoya McMiller (Christopher), three granddaughters, Naja Scriven, Zamiria Scriven, and Za’kya Lynn Scriven-McMiller, and three grandsons, Marvin Scriven, Joquan Jones, and Malique Jones, two sisters, Gwendolyn Ross and Vida Ross, one brother Jackie Ross; four aunts, Ruby McLean, Vera McKinnon, Francis McKoy, and Pearlie Ray; two uncles, Thurston Campbell and Devon McKinnon; in-laws, Helen McNeil (Thurman), Lucille Allen (Larry), Linda Taylor, Eddie Scriven and Earl Scriven; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, church family, and friends.
Marvin lived a life marked by loyalty, service, laughter, and love. His presence was steady, his heart was genuine, and his legacy will continue through every life he touched. Though he has taken his rest, the imprint of his journey remains—a reminder to stand tall and “Talk Strong”.
The family will receive friends at the home Friday from 3pm-6pm and Saturday from 12pm to 6pm.
