The Obituary
Martha July Roberson was born to Reverend John Alexander July and Elizabeth Lewis Williams July on April 18, 1930, in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
She was the oldest of fraternal twins born, with her sister, Mary July Jenkins being more responsive at birth. Martha was placed on the fire hearth as a still-born birth by the doctor but her mother’s sister, Mamie Lewis said, “My sister had too hard a time trying to have those babies to lose one.” Mamie cleared Martha’s mouth, shook, and patted her, and eventually Martha let out a loud cry.
Martha was baptized at an early age at Saint James Baptist Church in Rocky Mount. She was an active and devoted member of Community Baptist church in El Paso, Texas where she lived for many years with her husband and sons while stationed at Fort Bliss.
She returned to North Carolina in 2010 to live with her niece, Dr. Lorna Harris, and family. She was a 1948 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Martha was in the first class of Practical Nurses to graduate from Duke Hospital and practiced her profession for over fifty years in private homes and as a military wife in military settings. In her forties, Martha decided to go to college to become a Social Worker. She completed her Bachelor of Science Degree with honors in 1991 at Texas College, Tyler, Texas, became a licensed Social Worker and opened a senior care home, The Village Helper in Tyler, Texas.
Martha Roberson loved to travel and saw most of this world’s continents. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. She expected you to do your best and have “a sense of pride about how you carry yourself.”
Martha was married to John Oscar Roberson and to that union were born two sons, Monty Beragon Roberson (deceased) (Dora) and Johnny Espic Roberson.
Brothers and sisters who preceded her in death are Mary Jenkins, the Hon. Henry Ramsey, Jr., Independence “Bill” July, Melvin Morgan July, Leroy “Fish” July, John A. “Puddie” July, James July, Luther “Noodie” July, Adam July, Isaac Richard July, Retis July Fletcher, Bernie Williams, Jonas Nathaniel Williams, Marguerite Williams Thompson, Jasper Earl Williams, and Mabel Williams Hines.
Martha leaves to cherish her memory: her son, Johnny of California; seven grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
