Marilyn McIntosh Obituary

Mrs. Marilyn J. McIntosh, age 70 of 600 West Poplar Ave unit 341 Carrboro, NC passed on Monday, July 16, 2018 at UNC Hospice Home, Pittsboro, NC.

Marilyn McIntosh was born on August 25, 1947 in Philadelphia, PA. She is the daughter of Elizabeth Jenkins and Thomas Mitchell. She was raised in Miami, FL with two other siblings: Freddie Anne and Alice. Marilyn attended Booker T. Washington High School in Miami Florida where she met and later married Nathaniel Strong.

Marilyn’s greatest treasures in life were her children and grandchildren. She understood the true meaning of family and with that she lived each day surrounded by the people she loved. Her love for children was evident to all who met her. It was not uncommon for the children in the neighborhood to congregate at our home.

Her other hobbies included sewing and crocheting.  Each Christmas her children received homemade clothing coupled with a handmade crochet item.

Although she enjoyed being a homemaker, from time to time she would dabble in nursing. She worked at several hospitals over the years including: Jackson Memorial Hospital and Broward General in South Florida. She rounded out her career performing private duty home care.

Marilyn was passionate in her advocacy surrounding children's rights and civil rights. She was a member of the Broward County NAACP as well as several local community organizing efforts. She never shied away from addressing injustice. She was a soldier through and through.

In her later years, she enjoyed visiting casinos throughout the country. In fact, she never met a casino she didn’t like.

Regardless of where her travels took her, she was grounded in her love for the Lord and her firm belief in Jesus Christ. Her bible was always bookmarked on 1 Chronicles 18, which describes many of the battle victories the Lord delivered to David. For she knew God had the final say, and her rest was in his victory.

In 2008, after suffering a stroke, she moved to North Carolina to be close to her family. Though she continued to travel, she enjoyed the scenic natural environment of the Carolina Longleaf Pines, Flowering Dogwoods, and the Cardinal.  Despite her health issues, Marilyn lived each day according to her favorite expression, “I’m going to live until I die.”

She is survived by six daughters: LaSharma, LaTarndra, Katie, Sabrina, Valderina, and DeAndre’; two sons, Darrell and Nathaniel and a host of grandchildren, other relatives and friends.
