Mrs. Lourine (Smith) Gilchrist, age 92 of Cameron, NC transitioned to eternal rest on Tuesday, August 6, 2024, at her residence.
Lourine was born December 23, 1931 to the late Mackie Smith in Western Harnett County, Cameron, NC. She was educated in the Harnett County School System, attending Johnsonville School.
Lourine worked several years packing K-Rations Meals for United States soldiers stationed in Vietnam. She was a domestic laborer in New York and Fort Bragg.
Lourine’s initial spiritual path began at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. Later in life she joined the newly founded St John Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a dedicated and faithful servant of the Lord. She loved her church and she worked in several capacities. She was a member of the Usher Board, served as the Sunday School Superintendent, Church Announcer and she worked with the Lunchroom Committee and the Janitorial Services. She was a member of the Pastor’s Aide Auxiliary, the Gospel Chorus, the Missionary Department and the Mother Board. She served faithfully until her health declined.
Lourine was a member of the Golden Adventurers Senior Group. She enjoyed traveling with the group, canvas painting, making jewelry and crafts; participating in plays, sharing in luncheons and hosting spaghetti plate sales.
Lourine loved her family. She was a wonderful baby sitter for many of her grand-children. She was a loving, kind person. Even with her quiet spirit, she was a prayer warrior. She visited the sick, shut-ins, nursing homes and hospitals.
Lourine also enjoyed shopping, traveling and vacationing with her family. She appreciated the little things, like family cook-outs, eating out after Sunday service or laughing at family shenanigans!
Lourine was preceded in death by her grandparents, James “Jim” and Emily Joyner Smith; her mother; husband, James Artis Gilchrist; brother, Calvin Coolidge Smith; sister, Mary Cameron Johnson, and granddaughter, Mekhia Gilchrist; many uncles, aunts, first cousins, nieces and nephews of the Smith Family.
Lourine leaves to cherish her memory and legacy, three daughters, Wanda Kendrick (Charley H.), Cameron, NC; Arndra Faye Smith, and Sinethra Gilchrist, Cameron, NC; and Artis A. Gilchrist (Genia), Cameron, NC; five grandchildren, Marco (Delma) Kendrick, Charlotte, NC; Adaryl Smith, Cameron, NC; Charley A. Kendrick, Fayetteville, NC; Sherika Pearson, Norcrass, GA; and TyAna Gilchrist, Cameron, NC; ten great grandchildren; two first cousins, Parthenia Chalmers, Cameron, NC; Lonell Smith, Spring Lake, NC; a second cousin, Rev. Addie M. McCrimmon, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
