Mr. Lelyn “Chuck” Kenneth Williams, a retired Industrial engineer, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 5, 2022 at Durham Veterans Administration Hospital, Durham, NC. He was surrounded and supported by his lovely wife and cousin at the time of his transition. In addition to his parents, Lelyn was preceded in death by his two brothers.
Born in Brooklyn, New York to the late James D. Williams and Rebecca Williams on May 29, 1945, Chuck was the youngest of three boys. He was a product of the public school system in Brooklyn. He received his first undergraduate degree from St. Francis College, Brooklyn, New York. Soon after, he enlisted and served his country in the United State Army, receiving many Medals of Honors. After being honorable discharged from the United States Army, Chuck obtained a BS degree from East Carolina University, Greenville, North Carolina, and a Masters of Engineering from North Carolina A&T University, Greensboro, NC. He was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree for his humanitarian efforts and civic endeavors; especially encouraging young people to get an education and assisting with scholarships for the same.
Lelyn was employed by the Army Core of Engineers in Jacksonville, Florida. He also worked for the New York State and North Carolina Prison Systems. He was a member of The Episcopal Church of Redeemer, Greensboro, NC. He held membership in the Men’s Day Choir, an active participant with the Boy Scout Program, and assisted in numerous fundraising activities.
Lelyn “Chuck” was a very kind and giving person, volunteering with many civic organizations. To name a few: NAACP, Habitat for Humanity, Food Bank of North Carolina, and disabled Veterans of America.
Lelyn was an avid chess player, loved the Arts, and going to the theater, and DPAC. He also enjoyed traveling, and watching Sc-Fi on television. He loved to make people laugh and readily offered complimentary remarks to individuals he met and conversed with.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Edna A. Williams, one daughter, Rosa Andrews, granddaughter, NyAsia W. Dunn (Tony), Fayetteville, NC; great-grandson, Kyan Dunn also of Fayetteville, NC; one godson, Stefun Baldwin of Pittsboro, NC; two brothers-in-law, Wesley Andrews of Pittsboro, NC and Willie (Freda) Andrews of Durham, NC; two sisters-in-law, Inez Williams, Maple Hill, NC, and Joan Williams, Hampton, VA; nieces, Stephanie Johnson, Apex, NC, Rolesha Harris (Rod), Durham, NC, and Katherine Woods, of Apex, NC; nephews, Victor L. Williams, Jr.; and Malik Almin, Pittsboro, NC, great-nieces, Bianca and Christiana; great-nephews, Christopher and Justin, and a host of cousins and friends.
