“When peace like a river attendeth my way
When sorrows like sea billow roll
Whatever my lot, thou has taught me to say
It is well, it is well with my soul”
Our beloved mother, Laverne “Verne” Mavis Fleming Bryant was born on her late sister Sadie’s birthday on June 11, 1959, in Harnett County, NC to the late John and Mavis Brower Fleming. She was cared for and reared by her maternal aunt and uncle, the late James and Annie Thelma Marie Brower Wilkerson, from age 6 months.
Laverne matriculated through the Harnett County school system and graduated from Benhaven High School with the class of 1977. After graduation she was employed with several companies to include Siemens-Allis, Eagle Electric and Moen. Laverne also lovingly helped at Woodard Family BBQ & Grill, a restaurant owned by her daughter and son-in-law. She later retired from Moen after 32 years of service as a planner. Her strong work ethics and aspirations were a great asset in helping her raise her three daughters.
Laverne accepted Christ at an early age and began her journey with Christ as a member of Spout Springs Presbyterian Church in Cameron, NC where she sung in the young adult choir and subsequently sung with the Male Chorus + One. At the time of her death, she was a faithful member of Walk By Faith Christian Center in Cameron, NC under the guidance of Apostle James and Pastor Beverly Prince. Laverne served as a member of the praise team, the youth experience/youth empowerment team, co-chaired the fellowship gathering team and also on the women’s gathering team.
Laverne loved and enjoyed spending quality time with her sisters and together they created “Sisters Ink”. In addition to her love for God, her family, and her church, Laverne loved to shop, vacation at the beach, and be a source of support to her grandchildren.
There to greet her at the gates of Glory in addition to her parents are her sisters Sadie F. McDougald and Merril L. Perkins, her brother John A. Fleming and nephew James O. Fleming.
Those left to cherish her memories and to continue her legacy of love include her children: Candace Newby of Sanford, NC, Jessica Woodard (Stephen) of Broadway, NC, Yolanda Fleming of Spring Lake, NC and bonus daughter Rosie Olds (Chris) of Fort Worth, TX; her grandchildren: Jae’Sean Snipes, Jayla Currie , James Currie III of Spring Lake, NC, Faith Woodard of Broadway, NC, Iyden Sullivan, Tylon Olds, Zamyre Olds, Aneras Olds of Fort Worth, TX; her sisters: Bobbie Gilchrist (Charlie), Algiareen Washington (Jerome) and Sharon Fleming of Cameron, NC: her brothers: Brent Fleming of Cameron, NC and Isaac Fleming (Cheri) of Garner, NC; her aunt: Alice Rose Brower of Cameron, NC; her God-Mother: Helen J. McLean of Cameron, NC; her sister-in-law: Ollie M. Holland of Cameron, NC; her brother-in-law: James McDougald of Cameron, NC; her best friends: Connie Buie (John) of Sanford, NC and Jackie Murchison of Cameron, NC; many generations of nephews, nieces, cousins and a plethora of friends.
Laverne’s faith in God was a testament to all who knew her. She was guided by the living word of God and stood on his promises of not giving her more than she could bear. We celebrate the well lived life and legacy of our mother, sister, auntie, cousin and friend. We rejoice in knowing that God’s grace and mercy is sufficient, and he has answered our prayers for healing.
