LaVernie Mayfield Murchison, age 86 of 612 W. Garden St., Sanford, NC passed on Thursday, August 16, 2018 at Westfield Rehabilitation And Health Center, Sanford, NC.
On August 16, 2018, LaVernie Mayfield Murchison Sr. was called from this world into a place of eternal rest. He was born on March 28, 1932 in Jonesboro, NC to the late Carsy “C.J.” and Lorean Cox Murchison.
He was baptized and joined New Zion Missionary Baptist Church at an early age.
“Vern was educated in the Lee County School System. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, was honorably discharged, and chose Baltimore, Maryland as his home. He always had a keen ear for music and it came as no surprise when he played the organ and guitar at Gethsemane Spiritual Temple.
He was employed by the Social Security Administration and the General Services Administration.
After 20 years with GSA in Air Conditioning and Refrigeration, he retried, returned to Sanford, and reunited with his home church. His service to the church included treasurer, musician and trustee. Some of his memorable occasions were when he received a plaque from the Deep River Missionary Baptist Association for commitment and dedicated service in providing musical accompaniment and when he was honored for the many years of outstanding service and devotion to his church.
He was affiliated with several organizations including: Khalif Temple #144, Worshipful Master of Sanford Masonic Lodge #101, Worthy Patron of James Hill Chapter #63, Order of the Eastern Star and Keeper of the Seal of G. Wesley Allen Consistory #324.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Murchison and his brother, James Edward Murchison.
Left to cherish his memories include his devoted sons, Sammy Graham, (Darlene) and LaVernie Murchison Jr., (Deneice) of Baltimore, MD; grandchildren, Sharne Williams (Tyrone) of Kernersville, NC, Damiene Connor of Baltimore, MD, and Cherise Murchison of Baltimore, MD; sister, Allene Williams of Sanford, NC; two great grandchildren; his extended family, Alice McKinnon, Norma Bernard, Kelly Womack, Robyn McKinnon, Eugenia Foxx, John Sid Thompson and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
