Obituary

Joyce Davis, a beloved educator, devoted wife, and woman of profound faith, passed away leaving behind a legacy of knowledge, service, and grace. Born in Chatham County to the late Clyde Thomas Alston and Julia Mae Alston, Joyce was a proud native of the area. It was within the Chatham County school system that she first developed her lifelong passion for learning—a spark that would eventually ignite the minds of thousands of students across two states.

Joyce was a gentle soul who never raised her voice, moving through the world with a kindness that transformed her house into a home filled with warmth and laughter. Her journey was rooted in her faith, growing up in the Mitchell Chapel church family before finding a longtime spiritual home at St. Paul’s Baptist Church under Rev. Dr. Lance Watson. It was there that she met her husband, Conrad J. Davis III, beginning a 47-year journey of unwavering support and unconditional love. Conrad fondly remembers that for him, it was love at first sight. Together, they shared a life of exploration, whether enjoying movies, traveling to new destinations, or simply learning together.

Her greatest joy in life was her two children, Brittany and Brandon. Joyce dedicated herself to ensuring they had every opportunity, whether she was meticulously braiding her daughter’s hair, attending years of dance classes, or cheering at her son’s football practices. Whether helping with a difficult homework assignment or preparing a detailed lesson for her students, Joyce’s commitment to excellence and her caring heart stood out above all else.

An academic at heart, Joyce attended Bennett College, earning her degree in Science with an emphasis on Earth Science and Biology. She was a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., embodying the sisterhood’s commitment to service. She later earned her Master’s degree in teacher education from Columbia University in New York City. Her professional life spanned 40 years—five in New York and 35 in Richmond—where she served not just as a science teacher, but as a mentor who believed deeply in the power of education.

Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her devoted husband, Conrad J. Davis III; daughter, Brittany D. Davis; and son, Brandon C. Davis. She is also survived by her sister, Dr. Edna Cogdell (Calvin); her brother, Thomas Earl Alston (Jennifer); sister-in-law, Sandra Alston; and her beloved grandson, Elijha. Her legacy continues through her many nieces and nephews: Kimberly Cogdell Grainger (Wayne), Byron Cogdell, Shannon Alston, Jasmine Alston, Crystal Dowdy, Decie Alston, Leigh Alston, Elijah Davis, Elyse Boise, Royce Grainger, Parker and Robyn Cogdell, Ja’Ciyon Scales, and Miracle Alston, along with a host of other relatives and dear friends.
