John Henry Matthews

John Henry Matthews, Sr was born in the Piney Ridge community, NC on December 8, 1944, to the late Roland & Dorothy Matthews. He departed peacefully from Earth to his Heavenly Home on Tuesday, August 31, 2021.

John started as a young worker in the Sawmill. He married the love of his life, Betty Ann Matthews, on April 1, 1966. God blessed this union with 55 years of marriage. John was a faithful worker at Georgia Pacific for 35 years and retired on December 29, 2006. His enjoyments in life were farming, raising cows, and spending time with his family. John was well known for his desserts, “signature” lemonade, and for sharing his homegrown vegetables with the community. John was a faithful member of Piney Ridge United Methodist Church and served on
the usher and trustee board as well as a member of the choir.

John was preceded in death by his parents, Roland & Dorothy Matthews; siblings, Roland Matthews Jr, Authur Lee Matthews, Jack Benson Matthews, Lottie Jane Matthews, Peggy Ann Graham;  sons, John Henry Matthews, Jr, and Dennis Marsh.  

He leaves to cherish his wife Betty Ann Matthews; five children, Shelia Humphrey, Diane Hill, William Campbell (Linda), Kenneth Marsh and Kevin Marsh; eight siblings, Archie Matthews (Friend, Agnes), Richard Matthews (the late Peggy), Gloria Parks (Paul), Marcie Chalmers (Sinclair), Jesse Matthews (Tracey), Kenneth Matthews (Deborah), Anthony Matthews (Julie), Jennifer Matthews (Brian). John had 2 children that he helped raise as his own Jermaine Marsh (Sharon) and Shante Hoskins (Steve). A special niece Kenita Matthews-White (Johnny). Many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Loving memories will forever remain with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

A special acknowledgment to his brothers, Diane and Kenita who were dedicated to helping care for him during his illness.
