Ms. Joan Thomas Brooks, age 75, of Siler City, NC, transitioned into eternal rest on Wednesday, June 2, 2021 at Chatham Hospital in Siler City, NC.
Joan Thomas Lassiter Brooks was born November 22nd, 1945 in Lee County, NC to the late Thelma Bland and Lonnie Gunter and raised by her adopted parents, the late Edna Frazier Gunter and Carrol Lassiter, in Alexandria, VA. She graduated from Parker Gray High School in Alexandria in 1963 and went on to study Elementary Education at Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, Hampton, VA. During her junior year of college, in the spring of 1966, she would be initiated into the Gamma Theta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
Joan would meet the love of her life during her time in Virginia. She was courted by Vendell G. Brooks for a time and finally gave in to his charm. They were married for over 50 years. When they first moved to North Carolina they worked and lived in Chapel Hill where Joan worked for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill General administration office. Joan would later move and settle here in Lee County where she worked for and retired from (then) AlliedSignal (now) Honeywell in Moncure NC. She worked here for 15 years. She worked in administration and clerical work. She would continue in this profession for Attorney Fred Webb before retiring for good 7 years later. Joan was also a proud business owner of her own tax company, JTB Services LTD.
If anyone knew Joan they knew she loved one day of the week more than others; Sundays. Sundays were for Jesus and NFL football. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan and one of the biggest North Carolina Tar Heel fans you have ever met. In the month of March, she was ready to root against Duke and pull for her Tar Heels.
She was also an ordained minister and made an Elder of Exousia Christian Fellowship, Inc. Joan loved the Lord and shared the word of God with anyone who listened. She loved to sing and preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In her later days in life, her health declined and she settled on her last days in the care of the Siler City Center, in Siler City, North Carolina.
Joan Thomas Lassiter Brooks ascended into her Father’s house in Heaven on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband Elder Vendell G. Brooks.
