Jennie graduated from Horton High School, Pittsboro, NC in 1949. She was employed with UNC and retired after 33 years of service. Jennie joined Haw River at an early age and was a faithful and active member. She loved the church, pastor, and members, and will truly be missed. She served as a devoted member of the Usher Board for over 50 years, served as the Chairperson of the Floral Committee, and assisted the Food Bank Ministry until declining health no longer allowed her to continue.
“Ma Jennie” as she was often called, was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing and loving her. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnnie Chavis; sister, Hattie Seymour; and brother Roland Burnette. She is survived by her son, Jesse (Brenda) of Durham; grandson, Steven (Idania) whom she adopted and raised (Atlanta, GA); one sister, Mae Ruth Seymour (Paul) of Pittsboro; four other grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren; a host of devoted nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
