James Roger Atkins

Mr. James Roger Atkins aka "Jimmy", 90, of Sanford, NC, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at his residence.

THE OBITUARY 

James “Jimmy” Atkins was born on October 15, 1933, in Moore County, NC to the late Gracie Atkins and L.D. Thompson. Jimmy said his final goodbye at his earthly home on April 13, 2024.

Jimmy was a wonderful and loving husband to his wife and father to his children. He worked for Abraham’s Auto Glass Company for 40+ years as a Glass Glacier and started his own business as an auto mechanic. He relocated back to Sanford after his retirement from Abrahams Auto Glass in 1990.  Jimmy accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Alston Chapel United Church of Christ in Sanford. He was a Deacon at Alston Chapel United Church of Christ, and Sunday School Supervisor until the decline of his health. Jimmy had a beautiful voice which he used to glorify the Lord. It was apparent how much he genuinely loved the Lord. He had many sayings that could bring a smile to one’s face in an instant. Jimmy was a hard-working man that many would come to ask for advice and support.

Jimmy is preceded in death by his parents and siblings:  Maggie Atkins Dowdy, Verta Haynes, Jack Atkins and Rebecca Riddick.

He is survived by his wife; Doris Atkins of 66 years; his son Jimmy Atkins Jr.; daughter, Umeka Covington; six grandchildren: Teneisha Brown, Rakeem Chesney, James Atkins IIl, Robert Pope Jr., Talitha Covington and Naomi Covington; and six great grandchildren. Jimmy is also survived by his loving sister Mary Peaks, numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A special recognition of his niece Phyllis Riddick. The family would also like to thank the medical staff of FirstHeath Medical Center and Gentle Touch Home Health agency who diligently cared for Jimmy throughout his medical care.
