Irma Marsh Obituary

Ms. Irma Lee Marsh, age 87, of Bronx, NY, formerly of Pittsboro, NC, transitioned to eternal rest on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at Bronx Care Healthcare in Bronx, NY.

The Obituary

Irma Lee Marsh, a vibrant soul who touched the lives of many, departed this life on December 29, 2024, at Bronx Care General Hospital in Bronx, New York; she was 87 years young.

Irma was born on June 3, 1937, at home, to the late Bennie and Lydia Marsh in Pittsboro, North Carolina. She would be the third, and the first girl, in a line of nine children. Irma’s parents were devout Christians and instilled unwavering faith in their children. Irma joined Evans Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church at a young age, a loyal follower of her family’s church throughout her entire life, a decision that guided her faith and journey.

Irma received her education in Chatham County and graduated from Chatham High School with her high school diploma. After high school, she worked for a short period of time in her hometown and being an extremely hard worker and an independent woman, Irma saved enough money to move to New York City to begin a new adventure. When landing in her new home state, Irma obtained a position in the healthcare industry at a nursing home in Manhattan, New York. With unwavering determination and a strong work ethic, loving what she did, she worked her entire career and retired with that nursing home’s organization. Even after retirement, devoted to what she loved to do, she worked in the private sector of the healthcare field into her late 70s.

While her professional achievements were significant, Irma cherished her family above all else. Being the pioneer and natural caregiver that she was, Irma encouraged and assisted her other siblings to move to New York City as well, embodying the role of a loving and supportive elder sister. Irma even lived in the same building as her sister for a long time until she solely bought and independently moved into her own home in the Bronx.

Irma became a mother to her only child, a little girl named Kathy, in 1958. Kathy would grow up and eventually bear two children of her own, Erica and Champagne. Irma loved and doted on her family. Irma was a beacon of wisdom and strength. Fiercely independent and private yet deeply caring, she offered a listening ear and insightful advice to all who sought her counsel.

A lifelong learner, Irma was always knowledgeable about how one could improve upon oneself. Though she made the Bronx her home, she always loved going to North Carolina and always dreamed of moving back. Though that dream did not come to fruition, North Carolina, where her family’s dreams began and were rooted, always remained her true “forever home”. Beyond her family and career, in true independent fashion, she did not forget to love and take care of herself.

Irma embraced life with zest. She enjoyed traveling, exploring the Caribbean islands and experiencing the excitement of Las Vegas. With an eye for style, she always presented herself with grace and elegance, loving to look “sharp” and always being “dressed to the nines”. And, of course, she found joy in the simple pleasures, such as listening to her favorite music, from the soulful sounds of James Brown and Aretha Franklin to the thrilling victories of her beloved New York Yankees.

Irma’s parents, Bennie and Lydia Marsh, seven (Frank, Ben, Jr., Frances, Helen, Roger, Mary, and Joe) out of her eight siblings, as well as her daughter, Kathy Marsh, preceded her in death.

She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her two granddaughters, Erica Brinson and Champagne Marsh-Williams (Charles Williams); her great-grandchildren: Maxwell Marsh-Upson, Tiffany Marsh, and Charlii Marsh-Williams; and her brother, Jerry Marsh (Janice), as well as a host of family and friends who deeply love and miss her.

Irma was a passionate, independent, extroverted, hardworking, and, most importantly, loving individual. She is, and for the rest of our lives, will be sorely missed, deeply cherished, and forever remembered.
