Mr. Horace Cherry, age 82, of Pittsboro, NC, transitioned to eternal rest on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at the Siler City Center in Siler City, NC.
Horace Cherry, son of the late Anderson Boone and Clara Cherry, was born on March 20, 1944, in Kelford, North Carolina.
During his formative years, He became a member of Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church in Windsor, NC, where he remained until his health declined. He received his education through the Bertie County School System.
Mr. Cherry later relocated to Yonkers, New York, where he met and married Betty Jean Horton Cherry in the 1960s. Their marriage was blessed with one daughter, Ronel Cherry Bryant, born in 1967. In 1974, he welcomed a son, Maurice Brown Cherry, through his union with Carolyn Brown. Subsequently, in 1984, he married Shirley Boddie Cherry, who predeceased him in May 2019.
While residing in Yonkers, Mr. Cherry was employed by General Motors in Tarrytown, NY. He later moved to Newport News, Virginia, where he worked at the Norfolk Shipyard until his retirement.
He was predeceased by three siblings, Florence Cherry Speller, Anderson Cherry, and William James Cherry, and his stepmother, Rosa Bond Cherry.
Mr. Cherry is survived by two children, Ronel Cherry Bryant (Roy) of Pittsboro, NC, and Maurice Brown Cherry (Karen) of Snellville, GA; four brothers, Joseph Cherry (Elizabeth) of Lewiston‑Woodville, NC, Milton Earl Cherry (Louise) of Ahoskie, NC, Clifton Cherry (Florence) of Kelford, NC, and Steve Cherry (Bernice) of Greenville, NC; two sisters, Lizzie Virginia Caldwell (Bryan) of Chesapeake, VA, and LaTonya Gaskins (Kirby) of Winterville, NC; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
