Hermon Lee Obituary

Mr. Hermon Olanda Lee, age 81 of Brooklyn, NY, and formerly of Moncure, NC, transitioned to eternal rest on Thursday, February 8, 2024.

Hermon Olanda Lee was born on November 25, 1942, to the late John William Lee and Hattie Mae Lee in Moncure, NC. He was the seventh of fourteen children.

Hermon grew up in a home where the love of God, love of family, and hard work were core values, and it would be these values that would shape the great man he was to become.

Hermon started serving the Lord at an early age as a member of the Mount View Church AME Zion in NC.

He was the school bus driver while attending Horton High School in Pittsboro, NC where he graduated June 1, 1961.  Hermon was off to a great start and after graduation, armed with his faith, the love of his family, and a natural zest for life, he moved to Brooklyn, NY.

Hermon was the perfect combination of country gentlemen and city thrill seeker. It would be this mix that would help him win over the affections of a beautiful songbird, Jacqueline (Sylvia) Terry and the Terry Family. Hermon would become a member of Friendship Baptist Church under the tutelage of Jacqueline’s father, the late great Rev. Enoch W. Terry and would go on to marry his songbird, Sylvia on April 4, 1961. During this union Hermon and Sylvia would raise two beautiful and talented children, Deonna and Dean Lee. The marriage of Hermon and Sylvia would hold true to the saying “a family that prays together, stays together.” Their faith was strong and their connection deep.

Hermon knew the blessed life he was to lead was a direct correlation to his relationship with the lord, and so he worked in the vineyard, tirelessly. A founding member of the Assembly of Prayer Baptist Church, Hermon was a soldier for the Lord and an example for the church. He wore many hats in the church: trustee, choir member, Sunday school teacher, groundskeeper, mechanic, bus driver, and greatest sunrise service grits maker of all time. He was blessed for his faithful service.

He was blessed with a thirty-year career at Grumman Aerospace. After retiring from there, he was blessed with thirty-two years at the Town of North Hempstead Parks and Recreation, and while he enjoyed the fruits of his labor, nothing blessed his life more than spending time with his family.

Hermon excelled as a family man and never met a family member that he didn’t love or didn’t take a picture of. He was the life of every party, and he was intentionally present in the lives of all his family. If it was going down, Hermon Lee was going to be there!  As important as all his family was and as much as he loved us, his world would become complete the day his granddaughter, Diana Lee entered it. Hermon Lee loved him some Diana, aka “his little one”. He instilled in her everything that was instilled in him. It was because of this that Diana found all the strength she needed to care for him for the last four years of his life. Thank God for his witness during this life.

Hermon Lee was preceded in death by his father and his mother, the late John William Lee and Hattie Mae Lee; brothers, Leon Lee, James Wallace Lee, Bernard Lambert Lee, Marzell Ray Lee, and Willard Jerome Lee, and two sisters, Constella Lee McIver and Carolyn Lee Bradley.

Hermon Lee leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife of nearly sixty years, Jacqueline (Sylvia) Lee; daughter, Deonna Lee; son, Dean Lee; seven grandchildren, including the apple of his eye Diana Lee, and many great grands; brothers, Harold Lee (Haroldine), Raymond Lee (Virginia); sisters, Joan Lee Bradley, Armentha Lee Davis, Cledia Lee Holland (Wayne) and Vanessa Lee Newby (Steve); sister in love, Deborah Terry; and a host of nieces and nephews, whom he loved as his own, cousins, and his entire church family.
