Mr. George Simmons, age 71 of Winston Salem, NC transitioned into eternal rest on Thursday, July 16, 2020, at his residence.
George DeBerry Simmons was born on April 3, 1949, and transitioned from his life on earth to his eternal, heavenly home on July 16, 2020. He was one of five children born to the late Dr. James S. Simmons, Sr. and Gladys DeBerry Simmons of Sanford, NC.
George lived in Sanford for most of his childhood but left home in 1963 to attend St Emma Military Academy in Powhatan, VA. Following high school, he attended Morehouse College in Atlanta and graduated with the class of '72. While at Morehouse, he pledged Kappa Alpha Psi, his beloved fraternity. At some point later, he attended 2 years of dental school at UNC, Chapel Hill, where his studies were interrupted by medical problems.
During the last 20 years of his life, George lived in Winston Salem, where he was the Home School Coordinator at South Fork Elementary. Later, he served as counselor to men who had been recently released from incarceration.
George leaves to honor his memory, 4 siblings, Barbara Simmons of Washington, D. C., James S. Simmons, Jr., (Pamela), of Stone Mountain, GA, Erin Simmons Johnson, ((Farris), of Watkinsville, GA, and Cheryl Simmons of Alexandria, VA, 3 nieces, Pamela Simmons, Adara Ervin, Nia Ervin, and 1 nephew, James S. Simmons, III, (Merida), and many other beloved relatives and friends.
