Mr. George Harold McNeill, Sr., age 79, of Richmond, Virginia, formerly of Sanford, NC, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
The Obituary
Mr. George Harold McNeill, Sr., was born December 16, 1945, in Sanford, North Carolina to the late Willie and Maggie Florence McNeill. He peacefully entered from this life to begin his eternal life on Tuesday morning September 23, 2025, at 6:20 am at Riverside Health & Rehabilitation Center Danville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, his beloved wife: Mrs. Carolyn Jeanette McNeill; and all his siblings. George was the last surviving of thirteen children born to Willie and Maggie Florence McNeill.
Educated in the North Carolina school system, George began working various jobs throughout Lee County in his early years. After relocating to Richmond, Virginia, he found long-term employment with Richmond Commercial Moving Company, where he served as a supervisor and driver until the business closed. He later worked part-time as a cook at Marketplace Convenience Store, where he quickly became known and loved as “Pops” and “Old Man.” Customers often praised him as the best cook the store ever had — a testament to the kindness, warmth, and charm he brought to every interaction.
George was a faithful member of 31st Street Baptist Church in Richmond, Virginia, under the leadership of Pastor William Davis. After giving his life to Christ, he served as a Deacon alongside his brothers. Together, they faithfully operated the church van ministry, ensuring that anyone wishing to attend services had a reliable ride to and from church. His commitment to the Lord and the church brought him great joy. On August 30, 2025, while hospitalized at Saint Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, he rededicated his life to Christ — a final affirmation of his enduring faith.
In his leisure time, George loved fishing and proudly claimed no one could out fish him. A spirited debate about fishing was one he was always ready for — and rarely lost. He also enjoyed tinkering with cars and electronics, often trying his hand at repairs with confidence and determination.
George leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and community. He is survived by his children: Jacqueline McKendall of Sanford, NC; Stephanie McNeill of Hopewell, VA; George McNeill Jr. of Sanford, NC; Keashea Lewter of Newark, NJ; Katherine King (Eddie) of Fayetteville, NC; Christopher McNeill of Sanford, NC; Gary Jackson of Sanford, NC; and Patricia Bosher, Marvin Bosher, Rodney (Queen) Bosher, and Sandra Bosher, all of Richmond, VA.
He is also survived by four sisters-in-law: Betty R. Foxx of Sanford, NC; Minister Evon McKendall and Missionary Alfreda McKendall of Newark, NJ; and Christena McNeill of Cleveland, OH.
George had many beloved nieces and nephews. Special nephews who were like sons to him include Mitchell West, Charles McLeod, Kevin McNeill, and Eric Boisseau, with a devoted nephew, Lewis Landrum of Richmond, VA, who frequently checked in on him. Special nieces include Sharon Flowers, Nicolia McNeill, Patrice Whitaker, Shelia Lane, DaQuana Mann, and Tameca Bosher, as well as two caring nieces, Melissa and LaVoon Landrum of Richmond, VA, who remained close and attentive.
He also shared a meaningful friendship with Patricia Dennie of Richmond, VA.
George will be deeply missed by a host of loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all who were blessed to know him.
