Freddie Mitchell Obituary

Mrs. Freddie Mae Mitchell, age 91, of Carrboro, NC, entered eternal rest on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, at her residence.

The Obituary

Mrs. Freddie Mae Mitchell a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend passed peacefully from this life at 3:22am the morning of December 10, 2024, after a gradual decline in health.

She was surrounded by her loving family. Freddie was born on January 19, 1933, to Mr. Freddy Morrow and Ms. Rosa Farrington.

Freddie attended Lincoln High School. She loved school. She later began taking care of her siblings while her mom worked. Freddie learned a lot about running a household from her aunts and a few other seasoned women in the community, she learned at an early age what is meant by “It takes a village” as she relied on her village many days for help, guidance, and prayer.

Freddie grew up in Chapel Hill where life for her family started on Gomain Street, and later after marrying John Mitchell Sr., they joined the Councilville Community where they lived for over sixty years.

Freddie married John Elec Mitchell and to their union, eight children were born. Outside of being a mother, and wife and having helped raise her sibling, Freddie also worked for Mr. Dean E. Smith as a housekeeper for many years, she and Dean had a great relationship and when asked about her, he would always say, “Freddie is a wonderful woman”, and she loves those Tarheels. Freddie also worked for the Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools as a cafeteria worker for thirty-three years. Freddie was the baker and enjoyed baking goodies for the staff and children. Her homemade specialties were yeast rolls, cinnamon buns, cookies and biscuits. Freddie cooked and baked with love, no one could come close to mastering a lot of her recipes because she hardly ever measured anything, she just knew how much to add or what to do and she did it with the most special ingredient LOVE.

When Freddie was not working, you could find her fishing with her sister Trina from sunup to sundown, planting flowers, finding yard sales, playing spades, out shopping, and rooting for her NC Tar Heels.

All these things were special to her, however, there was one place that was a priority above them all and that was her dedication to St Joseph CME church.

Freddie joined St. Joseph at an early age. She learned so much about Living, Loving, and Serving from her church. She loved the Lord and ALWAYS shared of his goodness. One thing her family took pride in was even suffering with dementia, if you were to ask her where she goes to church, she would tell you” St. Joseph” every time. St Joseph is where Freddie found her real joy. Her love for God and her church led her to serve in many capacities until her health declined. She had the voice of an angel, and she enjoyed singing in the Gospel Travelers, The Senior Choir, one song she loved to sing because she knew in her heart to be true was “I can’t even walk without you holding my hand”.  This song stirred up the congregation every time she sang it, she sang it with passion, knowing that in everything she had been through, God was right there holding her hand guiding her through. Freddie also loved Hymns. She would often tell her grandchildren “Those Hymns mean something”, and today we can now say without a shadow of a doubt, we understand. Her favorite hymn is, The Solid Rock. Even in the state of her dementia when hymns were sung in her presence, she would join in. Freddie also served on the Stewardess Board, and the kitchen committee, and faithfully attended Sunday School until her health declined.

Freddie was proceeded in death by her husband, Mr. John Elec Mitchell; two sons, Ronald Mitchell and Jarrett Mitchell; one daughter, Valerie Mitchell; four brothers, Matt Farrington, Walter Morrow, Russell Morrow, and Dennis Farrington Sr.; one sister, Martrina Morrow; one grandson, Antonio Perry.
