Fred McIntosh, Jr. Obituary

Mr. Fred Thomas McIntosh, Jr., age 84 of Bear Creek, NC transitioned to eternal rest on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Fred Thomas McIntosh, Jr., son of the late Fred Thomas McIntosh, Sr., and Irene Palmer McIntosh, was born on July 18, 1939, in Chatham County. Fred lived a full and vibrant life, known for his strong-mindedness and kindness. He peacefully passed away on July 9, 2024, after courageously battling cancer. Fred’s final days were spent surrounded by his loved ones, who brought him comfort and peace.

Fred was a beloved member of Thompson Chapel AME Zion Church. He proudly graduated from JS Waters School in 1960, where he excelled as a baseball player and discovered his love for driving while working as a school bus driver. This passion led him to a fulfilling career in truck driving, from hauling pulpwood to exploring the country in his treasured blue Peterbilt truck. That truck was more than a vehicle; it was a vessel of countless family adventures, including memorable years spent in New York.

In 1960, Fred married Constance Dark Craven, who preceded him in death. In addition to his parents, his sister Jessie Lee McIntosh also preceded him in death.

Known affectionately by many as Cigar, Grayboy, and most often Freddie Gray, he was a dynamic, multifaceted man. He drove trucks with passion, raced cars with fervor, and ran McIntosh Grocery, along with other successful ventures. His determination and zest for life were truly inspiring.

Freddie Gray was well-loved, especially by his children —Freddie Smith (Regina), Lisa McIntosh, Rosa Sonya Lee, Tony McIntosh, Iris Yarborough, and Kimberly Brower. His sisters, Doris Jean Jones (Herman), Deann Marsh (Daniel), and Johnnie Mae Hanner, along with his brother, John Robert McIntosh (Lorraine), hold treasured memories of him. His 17 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends will forever be thankful for the time they shared with him.

Take your well-deserved rest, Freddie Gray. You can now say, “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith” 2 Timothy 4:7.
