Evelyn Theressa Smith Weathers, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend; exchanged this life for one of eternal peace and rest on May 3, 2022.
Evelyn was born in Harnett County on October 14th, 1942, to the late Rufus Simuel and Isabelle Gilchrist Smith. She was the youngest of thirteen children. She attended Johnsonville High School and graduated with the Class of 1961. While in school, she sang in the glee club and played at different school functions.
Her spiritual experiences started at Mt. Moriah Baptist Church at an early age. She was a member of St. John Pentecostal Holy Ministries under the leadership of the late Elder Ethel Mae Evans and Overseer Shryl Baker.
She started playing the piano at the age of five years old. “Music was her passion!” She served as the minister of music for fifty-nine years. She also served as the president of the St. John Gospel Chorus for over fifty years, as well as the Bright Lights Youth Choir. Our mother took pride in serving in the housekeeping department of the church for forty years. Her music ministry spanned out for many years throughout the community, ministering in revivals, homegoings, and choir anniversaries.
For several years she was employed with Coty, Inc., Sanford, NC and with Thomas’ Greenhouse, Cameron, NC.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with family, church family, and friends, especially her classmates. She always looked forward to her summer vacation to Virginia Beach. She had many hobbies which included baking delicious desserts such as: coconut cakes, apple pies and peach cobblers; but her specialty was “Sweet Potato Bread Pudding.” When it came to raising plants and flowers, she had a “Green Thumb.” Around the holidays she decorated the church as well as her home. Evelyn was a very classy lady. She was admired for her unique style of dressing.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Norman Weathers, her parents, and eleven siblings.
She leaves to cherish her memories and her legacy, her devoted and loving children, Everette Smith (Deanara), Sanford, NC, and Lisa Smith of the home, and Lenora Weathers, Raleigh, NC; one brother, Lonell Smith, Sanford NC; four grandchildren, Tecoyia Smith, Sanford, NC, Deyonna Smith, Sanford, NC, Tyra Johnson (Henry) Sanford, NC, and Timothy McNeill (Danielle) Boonsboro, MD; two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Arianna McNeill; one grand-godson, Richard Rozier (Yaniris) Fayetteville, NC; two sisters-in-law, Ellen Brewington (Henry) Cameron, NC, and Carolyn Williams (Lawrence), Newport News, VA; one brother-in-law, Walter Weathers (Mary), Durham, NC, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and her best friends, Rosa Davis and Betty Chesney.
Our mother was like the “spine of a book”. She certainly held our family together.
Evelyn will sincerely be missed by her family, church family, and friends.
