Elmer Wiley Chesney Sr.

Mr. Elmer Wiley Chesney Sr., age 73 of Sanford, NC, transitioned into eternal rest on Friday, November 11, 2022 at UNC-Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC.

Elmer was one of eleven children born to the late George Eugene and Mattie Lee Chesney. He attended school in Lee County and grew up in the Poplar Springs Community. In later years, he became a member of Poplar Springs AME Church.

Elmer was a big, soft-hearted man with lots of love for his family. He enjoyed spending time hunting with his dogs and often went fishing with his sons. He also had a green thumb and always produced a good yield of tomatoes, cabbage, turnip greens, and collards. He took pride in the upkeep of his yard and grew the prettiest petunias and mums.

At an early age, Elmer developed a passion for logging and became a self-employed logger where he founded Elmer Chesney & Sons Logging. He later became a member of the NCFA              Pro-Logger Organization.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Eugene Chesney, Archie Chesney, Woodrow Chesney, and Wayne Chesney; and three sisters, Jessie Snipes, Martha Chesney, and Irene Chesney.

He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife, Betty Chesney of 47 years; one daughter, Deanara Smith (Everette); two sons Elmer “P-Nut” Chesney Jr. (Flora), and Kevin  Chesney (Latoya); one brother, Clarence Chesney; two sisters, Katherine Smith and Janet Chesney; five granddaughters, Lakyra Chesney, Deyonna Smith, Kamiyia Wicker, Akeelah Chesney, and Peyton Wicker; three grandsons, Timothy McNeill (Danielle), Mark McLean, and Keshon Chesney; one great-grandson, Jackson McNeill; two great-granddaughters, Arianna McNeill, and Wynter Rose Ziegler; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
