The Obituary
Eleanor Jean Bynum Dowdy was born October 8, 1933, to Lumis Bynum and Roberta Emerson Bynum in Goldston, NC. She took her final journey hand in hand with The Lord in the early morning of October 1, 2025. No more confusion; no more pain: no more worries.... she is free!
Eleanor graduated from Goldston Colored School in 1950.
Eleanor accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and savior as a very young girl at Roberts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Goldston NC, where she sang in the choir and served as an Usher. She later joined First Calvary Baptist church after moving to Sanford NC where She served faithfully in the Lillie Akin Senior Missionary Circle and served as an Intercessory Prayer Warrior.
Eleanor was a kind, strong willed, devoted wife and mother. She loved babies and nurtured and cared for many children of local families. Eleanor enjoyed helping others and gave generously to her church and family. She learned to drive late in life and enjoyed learning the parts and functions of her own automobiles. She purchased her own home and worked hard to achieve independence while working at multiple manufacturing jobs; but upon retirement, she chose to continue working as a Nanny in Cary, NC. She was a wise and God-fearing woman who would remind her children into adulthood to "Always pray for one another!"
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her former husband, Lynwood P. Dowdy Sr, and her son, Lynwood P. Dowdy, Jr.
She leaves to mourn her children, Ronald Allen Dowdy (Annette) of Wilson, NC; Sandra Dowdy (Joe) of Greensboro, NC; Ruth Jeanette Dowdy of Sanford, NC; Denise Dowdy Simpson (Robert) of Winston-Salem, NC. And a "special" daughter, Sheila Jones of Atlanta, GA., two sisters; Robena "Angelet" Harris, Greensboro, NC; and Bertha Mae Dowdy; Atlanta, GA; several grandchildren, great- grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins & friends.
