Mrs. Edith Louise (Moore) Hackney, age 71 of New Hill, NC entered into eternal rest on Saturday, October 14, 2023, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill, NC.
Edith Louise (Moore) Hackney was born on September 9, 1952, to the late Bernice and Ethelene Moore in Chatham County, NC. She married her longtime friend and love, Russell Hackney. She loved to love people. One of her favorite quotes was “Do what’s right and do what’s good.” Edith was a well-loved member of the community and especially, the Early Care and Education community. She was known for wearing her hats, which later became a part of her style and personality. She never had a “dress down” day, and if she did, it was a jogging set with boots or heels. The one thing people knew about her was that she loved GOD and her family. She talked about her loving husband and son daily. She would humbly brag about her son at every opportunity about his God-given ability to play the organ, which served God’s Kingdom.
Edith was also committed to being a lifelong learner. She received her associate degree in business administration and years later went back to obtain an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. Additionally, her diverse educational background included certifications in Christian Counseling, Life Coaching, and Executive Leadership.
Her life was a living example of servant leadership even in her professional career. Edith believed in servant leadership. Her entire life was committed to uplifting the community and serving others. Her career included working as a Community Outreach Specialist at Joint Orange Chatham Community Action (JOCCA) for over 10 years, later leaving to work as a Lead Teacher and Assistant Director for Get Smart, Inc. for another 10 years, etc. Lastly, after retirement, she returned to work as the Executive Assistant of Luxury Learning Resort and Spa since 2012, where she worked up until her transition. She believed that work was more than money, but was about the difference you made in a person’s life.
Edith not only devoted her life to serving children and families, but she also led and mentored other young and aspiring women business leaders and encouraged, supported, and led by example as to how to stand stern and firm in the business world. All these positions allowed Edith to minister to individuals who needed encouragement, compassion, love, nurturing, and “The word of God.” She ministered and bore witness to everyone she encountered. Edith was a life changer. She would pray for you, with you, and minister at every opportunity presented.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents, Bernice and Ethelene Moore, and her sister, Katherine Rodgers.
She leaves to cherish her memories her husband, Russell Hackney; her son, Rumarcus Hackney of Pinehurst, NC, one brother Bernice Moore, Jr. (Jacqueline) of Pittsboro, NC; four grandchildren, Maia Raven, Amiya Nicole, Malachi Devonte, and Markiya Khaliah; uncles, Bennie Moore (Beverly); Rev. Allen Moore (Gloria); a special niece, Tiffany Moore; special nephew, Gavin Rodgers; goddaughters; Ke’sha Ridges Percell, and Lindsey Evans and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
