Ms. Earna Mae (Hart) Horton, age 93 of Pittsboro, NC entered into eternal rest on Sunday, October 15, 2023, at her residence.
Earna Mae Hart Horton was born on November 09, 1929, to the late Clinton Hart and Judie Reaves Hart. She peacefully departed this life on Sunday, October 15, 2023. She was one of five children, Jesse, Walter, Osby, Mattie (Cozel), and Earna Mae.
She graduated from Goldston Colored School in Goldson, NC. She was a graduate of Fayetteville State Teacher’s College and earned a degree in elementary education. Upon graduation, she was employed as an elementary school teacher with Chatham County Schools. Earna Mae provided 33 years of service to the Chatham County School System. She was a very dedicated and caring person with students, school staff, the community, and the church. Everyone that knew her respected and cared for her. She developed a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.
She later met and married the love of her life, Alonzo David Horton. Some of their passions included gardening, cooking, baking, traveling, and helping other people.
Earna Mae was very active in her church and community. She joined Union Grove A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age. Earna Mae held several offices in the church: Deaconess, Stewardess, Missionary Parent Body President, Sunday School Teacher, Missionary Life Member Chair, Lay Council, and Usher. She was a longtime member of the Morning Star Chapter #594 Order of Eastern Star – Prince Hall Affiliate, where she was treasurer for several years.
Precious memories will forever be cherished by her sister, Mrs. Cozel Hart Woods; one niece, Brenda Dowdy Burns; 10 great nieces and nephews, several great-great nieces, and nephews; godchildren, Beverly Womble and Thaddeus Alston (TD); and a host of other relatives and friends.
