Dr. Rolf Lynton Obituary

Dr. Rolf P. Lynton

April 13, 1924 – December 1, 2024

Rolf Lynton died on December 1, 2025, age 100 yrs, 8 months. Born in Berlin into a part-Jewish family, Rolf’s formative experience was being a refugee in the England from 1938, often separated from his family. After completing school, he worked night shifts in a factory grinding airplane parts while earning his B.A. - both experiences that led to his first book on management. After WWII, Rolf worked as a Field Research officer at the new British Institute of Management, where he began his work in organizational development and became involved with the European Youth Campaign. That led to a fellowship at Harvard where, as he described it, he “met Ms. Ronken on the faculty there, my wife-to-be and my closest and full-time alter ego ever after.” Ronnie and Rolf married in 1955 and moved to Asia, settling then in South India, to direct the world-wide Aloka training center.

In 1966, the family moved to Chapel Hill, NC, so Rolf could further his graduate education. After earning a Ph.D. at SUNY Buffalo, Rolf had tenured positions at the Universities of North Carolina and South Carolina, the latter initially as Dean of the then new School of Public Health. In the early 80’s Rolf and Ronnie returned to Asia, for seven years in Indonesia where they worked on decentralizing the public health system and then went back to India for various projects including working with the NGO Pradan, which creates livelihoods for the poorest of the poor.

In 1991, they returned to North Carolina and semi-retirement but continued to spend months in India every year until 2016. Ronnie died in 2018, and Rolf continued to live alone and stay active, publishing his final and 16 th book in 2022. He swam three times a week until he was 98, when he broke his hip. In the hospital following his hip fracture, doctors predicted he would not walk or live alone again. Yet, proving the accepted wisdom wrong as usual, Rolf not only walked again but continued to live alone, and attended a professional conference in Scotland that same year.

Rolf has written about his career and about his series of decades-long collaborations that included Ronnie, Udai Pareek, Warren Bennis, Racine Brown, David Kiel and more briefly with others. These relationships were important parts of his intellectual and emotional life.

Rolf’s deep relationships in India, the UK, the US and multiple other countries continued until his death. He was touched by and proud of the multiple online celebrations of his 100th birthday with
large groups of international colleagues and the personal visits by dear friends from India, Scotland, and across the US. There is a wonderful interview with him on Storycorps https://archive.storycorps.org/interviews/rolf-lynton-has-led-a-remarkable-life-listen-as-he-shares-stories-of-some-of-his-marvelous-experiences/

Rolf was deeply connected to his family, increasingly as he aged. He reveled in being the patriarch of a growing family who he visited often and who visited him regularly. He loved being in on events and delighted in his three great-granddaughters. He was cherished by many. Rolf leaves behind three children: Maya (Damon) Rake, Dr. Nandani Lynton, and Devadas Lynton; four grandchildren: Mirea Lynton-Grotz (Dr. Martin Menski), Rajan Engh (Carolyn Roberts), Milena Engh (Joshua Bumgarner), and Chelsea Engh (Andy Myers); and three great-granddaughters: Amalia and Helena Menski, and Evelyn Engh.

There will be a memorial service on April 5, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of the Advocate, 8410 Merin Rd, Chapel-Hill. The Committal will be at 1:30 p.m. at St. Bartholomew's Cemetery, 204 W. Salisbury St., Pittsboro with lunch following in their Fellowship Hall. Please RSVP for lunch to profnlynton@gmail.com by April 1.
