A Legacy of Love and Purpose: The Life of Dr. Gloria Bailey
“Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.” – Proverbs 19:21
On August 1, 2025, our beloved Dr. Gloria Bailey—our most precious family jewel, a loving mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend—peacefully received her wings and returned to her eternal home, leaving behind a legacy that will echo through generations.
Her story began on August 30, 1949, in Baltimore, Maryland, where she was born Gloria Wilson, the second of five daughters to the late Emmitt Wilson and Mary Lee Wilson. Gloria grew up in a home filled with love, sisterhood, and the steady guidance of parents who valued faith and education. Her sisters—Diane Wilson Heartwell (deceased), Venus Wilson McKay, Joyce Wilson, and Renee Wilson Worthan (deceased)—were her lifelong companions, shaping the strong, nurturing woman she would become.
From a young age, Gloria’s faith took root. She was baptized at Cornerstone Baptist Church, beginning a lifelong journey with God. Gloria received her early education through the Baltimore City Public School System and graduated from Eastern High School in 1967. Her parents instilled in her the value of education, a principle she carried with her throughout her life.
She began her academic journey by earning a degree in Business Management from Baltimore City Community College. She went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Management Science from Coppin State College and later earned a Master of Education in Special Education. Her passion for learning never ceased. Inspired by her faith, she pursued and completed a Doctorate in Christian Counseling from the Christian Faith Bible College in 2022. In fact, she was the, Class of 2022 Valedictorian—an accomplishment that led her to be lovingly known as Dr. Gloria Bailey.
Life had another beautiful chapter waiting when Gloria met Lake Erie Bailey during her work in the medical field. Their deep friendship led Lake to introduce Gloria to her son, Dallin James Bailey, Jr. (deceased), whom she later married on July 30, 1970. From this loving union came two children: Davia Dana and Dallin James. Gloria was also a devoted and loving stepmother to Andrea Estella, Dallin’s older daughter.
Her career was as full and dynamic as her spirit. Dr. Bailey was a tireless worker and a woman of many talents. She began her career as a Certified Nursing Assistant at Maryland General Hospital and worked in private duty nursing. Though she excelled in many roles, the one closest to her heart was that of an Educator. She served as a teacher at Montrose School, St. Francis School, and Leith Walk Elementary School as a Special Education Teacher in the Baltimore City Public School System. After retiring from Baltimore City Schools, she continued her teaching career in Lee County, North Carolina. After earning her doctorate, she continued to serve her community by providing Christian counseling to those in need. As part of her spiritual journey, she also wrote a book titled “God’s Plan, Not Ours!”
Over the past 17 years, Dr. Bailey lived in Sanford, North Carolina, where she became an integral part of the community. Alongside her cousin and partner-in-service Cleo Bryant, she volunteered at the Enrichment Center, delivering Meals on Wheels.
She also shared her voice and heart through radio, appearing on WXKL Christian Talk Radio’s “Remnants Speaks” to encourage and uplift listeners. Since 2008, she had been a faithful member of First Calvary Baptist Church, where she served as a greeter on the Hospitality Committee, a member of the Usher Board, and a Sunday School teacher for both the Women’s Class and as a substitute for the Senior Class.
Her life was one of faith, service, learning, and love—a true legacy that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Dr. Bailey was a vibrant, loving, and spirited woman who brought light and joy wherever she went. Known for her sense of humor and her radiant, beautiful smile, she had a genuine love for life, her church, and Bible study. She had a gift for making others feel special—always giving thoughtful gifts for birthdays and special occasions, simply to spread happiness.
Dr. Bailey had a keen eye for fashion and was always elegantly dressed, with her hair perfectly styled. She also took pride in her yard, finding joy in keeping her outdoor space just as polished as she was.
In her Sanford neighborhood, she shared a special bond with her neighbor Linda. They exchanged texts every morning and looked out for one another. In fact, Dr. Bailey made it a daily practice to send uplifting messages and positive affirmations to her friends and family—always offering a word of encouragement to brighten someone’s day.
Her presence was truly uplifting—an inspiring and realistic beautiful soul who brought light to even the darkest days. She had a way of motivating others just by being herself, and her spirit continues to live on through everyone she touched. She was generous, grounded, and unforgettable.
Dr. Bailey’s favorite color was purple—a color symbolizing royalty—which suited her perfectly. She loved westerns and mystery shows, and she was an avid reader of mystery novels, especially those by Danielle Steel, she was a frequent visitor to the library.
“Our precious jewel will be deeply missed, yet her legacy of compassion, resilience, and inspiration will continue to shine through us all. While her absence leaves a deep void, her spirit remains alive in the wisdom she shared, the love she poured out, and the countless lives she impacted”.
Rest well, Dr. Gloria Bailey. Well done, good and faithful servant—well done.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories in the hearts of her children: Andrea E., Wyatt, Davia D. Bailey, and Dallin J. Bailey III; and her beloved grandchildren: Xiavian R. Brown, Myracle K. Brown, and Kailyn R. Bailey.
She is also lovingly remembered by her sisters, Venus McKay (Adrian C. McKay) and Joyce Wilson; her brothers-in-law, Joseph Worthan, Eugene Bailey (Gloria Bailey), Warren A. Bailey, and Edwin M. Butler; one sister-in-law, Toyia Brown; and her dear aunt, Betty Jean Judd.
Her memory will be treasured by her First Calvary Baptist Church family, under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Thomas E. Smith, Sr., Pastor, as well as by a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
