Dorothy McKinney Obituary

Ms. Dorothy Lois (Hatley) McKinney, age 84, of Pittsboro, NC, entered into eternal rest on Monday, August 12, 2024.

Dorothy Hatley Poston McKinney, affectionately known as Dot, Ms. Dot, or Gran, was born on April 10, 1940, in Chatham County to the late Regger Hatley and Mae Pearl Edwards. Her presence was a gift to all who knew her, and she was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Dot attended Horton High School and later earned her Cosmetology license, which she used to bring beauty and joy to countless lives for over 30 years. Her salon was not only a place for styling hair, but also a haven filled with laughter, smiles, and deep friendships. Her warmth and kindness made everyone who walked through the doors feel like family.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Sam Poston, and together they brought into the world their beloved son, Christopher Poston. Dot’s love for her family was boundless, and she found immense joy in the role of mother, and later, grandmother.

Dot’s life was a testament to her deep and abiding faith in Christ. From an early age, she devoted herself to serving the Lord, beginning as a faithful member of First Baptist Missionary Church in Pittsboro, North Carolina. There, she served with dedication on the Usher Board and the Pastor’s Aide Committee. Later in life, she found another spiritual home at Emmanuel Fellowship in Siler City, where she married Mr. Sam McKinney. At Emmanuel, Dot continued to serve with love, contributing to the Prayer Team and the Hospitality Committee.

Beyond her work as a cosmetologist, Dot was also a dedicated school bus driver for Chatham County Schools, serving for over 25 years. Her interactions with the students were filled with care and laughter, and she was cherished by those she safely transported to and from school each day.

Dot’s greatest joy came from the time spent with her grandchildren, Christopher, Kennedy, and Ashlynn. She delighted in singing, laughing, and cooking with them, creating memories that will forever be treasured.

Preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Betty Bright, Geraldine Couch, and Irma Stroud, Dot leaves behind a legacy of hard work, love and devotion. She will be deeply missed by her son, Chris Poston; her daughter in love, Tania G. Poston; her precious grandchildren, Christopher, Kennedy, and Ashlynn; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
