Ms. Doris (Horton) Cotton, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina passed away peacefully at UNC Memorial Hospital after a long fruitful life of 99 years and 4 months, early that morning, with her family lovingly by her side, the clouds lifted, and the angels ushered her to Heaven.
Doris was born in Chatham County, North Carolina on June 3, 1924, to the late George Allen Horton and Carrie Lee Horton.
She was educated in the Chatham County School System.
On July 12, 1948, Doris married Gattis Nelson Cotton, Sr and to this union, six children were born.
At an early age, she gave her life to Christ and was a dedicated member of St. Paul AME Church, where she served as a Stewardess and Missionary and performed many ancillary duties as called upon by her church.
Doris was honored as a Chapel Hill Town Treasure by making substantial contributions to her community, developing a sister parish relationship between St. Paul AME Church and Chapel of the Cross, where she worked for nearly 40 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gattis Cotton, Sr.; one son, William Anthony Cotton; two brothers, Matthew Horton and Walter Horton; and a great-grandson, Jaylen Parker.
Doris leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Ivey Jacqueline Parker (Michael), Valencia Bratton (Leamon), and Teresa Ann Cotton; two sons, Gattis Cotton, Jr., and Tony Alandis Cotton; one sister, Frances Taylor; one brother, Joseph Horton (Ellen); eight grandchildren, Bryan Parker, Kenneth Parker, Lavar Cotten, Valencia Jene Bratton, Julius Bratton, Telisha Nickerson, Terrence Cotton, and Anthony Billingslea; three great-grandchildren, Avery Jones, Lauren Cotten, and Jaylon Chestnut; one great great granddaughter, Kennedy Parker and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends.
