Doretha McLean Obituary

Ms. Doretha (Murphy) McLean, age 88, of Sanford, NC transitioned to eternal rest on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at her residence.

The Obituary

Doretha Murphy McLean was born on June 26, 1936, in Camden, South Carolina. She peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at her residence in Sanford, NC, at the age of 88 years.

Mrs. McLean joined New Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Sanford, NC at an early age under the leadership of the late Reverend E. N. Hooker and remained a faithful member until her health began to decline under the leadership of Rev. Douglas Waterson. She was a woman of strong faith who deeply loved the Lord and her family.

Doretha worked for many years at Jonesboro Lee Elementary School, where she was dedicated to keeping the school clean and ready for the children. She also worked at Ron’s Barn for a few years before taking early retirement due to health issues. Beyond her work, Doretha had a passion for gardening and took great joy in nurturing her plants. She also found fulfillment in visiting the sick and shut-in, offering comfort and companionship to those in need.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Louis McLean "Doc"; father, Tom Murphy Sr.; mother, Lillie Lyles; siblings, Rachael Boykin, Lois Rice, LJ Lee, Curtis Lee, James Lee, Thomas Murphy Jr., and Josephine Howze, and one half-brother, Jack Murphy.

Doretha leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children: Terry McLean, Theresa Winchester, Sharon Sutton (James), and Ermer Gail McLean, all of Sanford, N.C. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Kimberly McLean, Terry McLean Jr. (Kalyn), Latanya Smith (Derrick), Tina Riley (Monterale), Lynn Blue, Calvin Blue (Adrienne), and Dorinda Morgan (Marc); nineteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever cherish her memory.

Her legacy of love, faith, and dedication will live on through the many lives she touched.

Family and friends will be received at 48 Quality Lane, Sanford, NC 27332 (on Nicholson Road) on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 2:00pm-5:00pm
