Obituary

With heavy hearts and loving remembrance, we celebrate the life of Clarice Wright (Gilchrist) Douglass, 75, of Sanford, North Carolina, who was called home on Sunday, February 15, 2026. She entered this world on November 4, 1950, the second of five children to the late Howard and Clara Jane Gilchrist.

Affectionately known as “Rissie-cup” or “Rissie baby,” Clarice was known for her beautiful smile and quiet nature, but don’t let that quietness fool you, because she was also the protector of her family. Behind her gentle voice was unwavering strength. She stood firmly for those she loved and carried herself with grace, wisdom, and quiet confidence.

A proud graduate of W.B. Wicker High School, Class of 1968, Clarice was active in many school clubs, with the Spirit Club being her favorite. She was a dedicated student with a deep love for music, especially the timeless sounds of Lionel Richie.

Clarice had a zest for life that shone through her love for the beach, amusement parks, and every opportunity to create lasting memories. She held a deep appreciation for Black history and took pride in learning its rich legacy, as well as uncovering the stories woven into her own family’s history. She found comfort and joy in life’s simple pleasures, especially quiet moments spent watching old movies and enjoying her favorite sweets.

At her heart, Clarice was a nurturer. Caring for her family was her greatest joy, and her children were her heartbeat. She was a woman who worked tirelessly for her family. She was selfless, the kind of mother who made sure her children never went without. She was truly her sister’s and her brother’s keeper, someone they could lean on for guidance, direction, and support. She was a mentor, a source of strength, and she could always slip in a witty remark that made everyone smile.

Clarice devoted many years to her work at Spanco, where she built lifelong friendships. Her “work family” became an extension of her central family and inner circle, and through their close relationships, they truly became family as well, a testament to the warmth and loyalty she shared so freely.

In the early 1970s, she met the love of her life, James (Soulman) Douglass, who embraced her children as his own. Their love story continued for decades, and they were united in marriage in 2001. They built countless memories together, and their love remained until she transitioned home to be with Christ.

She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, James "Soulman" Douglass; her children, Clarinda Taylor (Rex Taylor) and William Tuck (Donna Tuck), and Clifton Douglas; and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also leaves her siblings, Peggy Wilson, Larry Gilchrist (Gail), Carolyn Fox, Edna Reaves, Sherri McNeil, and Juana Gilchrist (David), along with a host of great-aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and dear friends.

Clarice’s life was a beautiful example of love, strength, faith, and devotion. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on in the family she protected, nurtured, and loved so fiercely.
