Obituary
Charlotte Rebecca Harris Regester was born February 29, 1924, in Chatham County, North Carolina to the late George and Lillie Harris. She passed away on July 23, 2025, in Hillsborough, North Carolina. She was the last of her seven siblings, six brothers (Johnny, Ed, Chapin, Claude, and Cliff) and one sister (Maebelle). The parents also raised a niece (Rena), and a granddaughter (Lillie Mae) both deceased. Raised in Moncure, she attended a Rosenwald School through ninth grade and graduated from Horton High School in 1942. After moving to Chapel Hill, she married Albert Redo Regester; together they had three daughters during their sixty-one-year marriage. Charlotte valued her faith, family, and friends.
She was a member of Mt. View AME Zion Church in Moncure and later joined Second Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Known for her compassion, she supported her community by encouraging young protesters in the 1960s, providing meals for the sick, and maintaining a flower-filled yard. Charlotte enjoyed homemaking, including decorating, gardening, baking, and reading.
She maintained an organized home, read the newspaper daily, and often discussed current events with family and friends. She lived through World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, and the Inauguration of the first African-American President. She valued hard work and lived independently until the age of 100.
Charlotte leaves to cherish her memory three daughters Francesina (Rudolph), Gloria (Philip), and Charlene; three granddaughters Saran (Kevin), Ayo (Leon), and Nichole; four grandchildren Jasmine, Sterling, Jacob, and Parker; and one great, great granddaughter Liberty; a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins; and an outstanding team of caregivers headed by Jerdene Alston, Janie Alston, Suzan Headen, and Sharrie Skeen.
