Billy Sunday Dowdy

Billy Sunday Dowdy, age 84 of 8635 Old US 421  S., Bear Creek, NC passed on Tuesday, March 19, 2019 at Moore Regional Hospital. 

Billy Sunday Dowdy was born in Goldston, NC on January 6, 1935.  He was the first child born to the late Elmus Lee Dowdy, Sr.  and Novella Thompson Dowdy.  We know that His will was done when our husband, father, brother and friend fell asleep Tuesday night, March 19, 2019.
"Bill",  as he was lovingly called,  graduated from J. S. Waters High School, Goldston, NC, and attended Fayetteville State University.  He was an outstanding athlete who played basketball and baseball  while in school.  His duty to serve others was evident in a life lived as a father-figure to many, a teacher to the youth, a provider for those he loved deeply,  and a God-fearing example for all he encountered. 

Early in life he joined Roberts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church. Bill served his church  as an usher,  Sunday School Superintendent, and Sunday School Teacher.  He was an ordained deacon for more than 45 years and served as the church Financial Secretary for more than 35 years.  

Preceding him in death were his parents, Elmus and Novella Dowdy, a sister, Shirley Ann Dowdy and son, Steven Lee Dowdy.

He leaves behind many family members and countless devoted friends to cherish his memory and celebrate his life.  These include Bertha Bynum Dowdy, his loving wife of 63 years; his daughter, Shelia B. Lewis (Sidney), Suwanee, GA; two grandchildren, Steven William Lewis, Nashville, TN and Sydney Lewis Askew (Ryan), Savannah, GA; sisters, Josephine Cotten,  Goldston, NC, Hannah Johnson, Bowie, MD, Delma Murdock (Fred) Greensboro, NC. and brother Elmus Lee Dowdy, Jr, Goldston, NC; Sisters-in-law Eleanor Jean Dowdy, Sanford, NC and Robenia Harris (Hugh Miller), Greensboro, NC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
