Betty Lewis Obituary

On January 22, 2021, Ms. Betty D. Lewis transitioned to God. She was the fifth child born to Bennie R. Douglas and Pansy B. Douglas, with sisters and brothers Ola, Lemuel, James, Mozelle, Wilbert, and Hazel. Raised in rural Lee County, Betty Lewis matriculated through Lee County Schools and graduated from WB Wicker High School. She continued her education at Fayetteville State University. On March 18, 1960, Betty married Clarence Lewis. Birthed from their union was Sherryl Lewis, Cassandra Ekwem-White, and Clarence Eric Lewis. Following naval retirement, the family returned to Lee County, NC.

Betty was a lifelong member at Mount Olive Baptist Church in Moncure, NC. As a youth and young adult, you could find Betty serving the youth department, representing MOBC as a delegate for BTU, and singing in the Moncure Trio. Her servant's heart carried into adulthood as she worked as an usher and on the kitchen committee. Betty was a faithful member, you could find her sitting in the middle of the left side of the church, singing quietly with the choir and attentively listening to the preached Word. When she was not working, worshipping, or maintaining her home, you could find Betty bowling in her younger days. You might find her watching her recorded soap operas or cheering for her favorite football team (Carolina Panthers) or baseball team (LA Dodgers). She loved good conversation and a good laugh. She enjoyed soulful music and watching CNN. Betty is known for her culinary skills and her cakes. Betty was known for how she loved her family and community at large. She had a big heart, would tell you the truth and help you without judgment. She taught her family the value of selecting a quality in people. One of her proudest lifetime achievements seeing President Obama and Vice President Kamala Harris take the office of President and Vice-President of the United States.

She lived an honorable life. Preceding her in death, are her parents, four siblings, and husband. Left to mourn her are siblings James Douglas of Phoenix, and Hazel Atwater, her sisters-in-law Gloria Palmer and Erlene Lewis, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Betty was blessed to see four generations. Left to carry her legacy are her children Sherryl, Cassandra, and Eric- grandchildren: Ashley (Lester) Mcleod, Donte (Crystal) Lewis, Darryl Lewis, Erica White, and Christopher White. Her nine great-grandchildren: Jasmine (Sam) Wiggins, Faith Thorpe, Derrick Thorpe Jr., Josiah White, Masen Lewis, Nylah Lewis, Norah Lewis, Sevan Lewis, Erin Lewis, and one great-great-grandchild O’Lani Wiggins. She was loved deeply and will be missed by many!!
