Bettie Louise Leach

Bettie Lousie Leach 92, of Pittsboro, NC, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC.

Bettie Louise Leach, affectionately known as “Ms. Bet,” was born on March 8, 1934, the fourth of nine children blessed to William and Mary Leach. Raised in the close-knit community of Pittsboro, North Carolina, Bettie grew up surrounded by family and graduated from Horton High School.

From an early age, Bettie’s heart belonged to Mt. Sinai Church. Following a brief stay in New York during her youth, she returned home to North Carolina to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology, with a minor in music, from North Carolina Central University (NCCU). Armed with a passion for helping others, Bettie moved back to New York and dedicated her professional life to serving her community as a compassionate social worker until her well-deserved retirement. Throughout her life, she remained a proud and dedicated Eagle alumna.

Bettie possessed a vibrant, adventurous spirit. She loved taking road trips across the United States and Canada and thoroughly enjoyed cruising to various Caribbean islands. When retirement finally called, her heart led her right back home to Pittsboro, where she cared for her aging parents and reunited with her Mt. Sinai Church family.

Bettie served her congregation with absolute devotion. For approximately two decades, she faithfully served as the church treasurer, stepping down only after training her successor in 2019. She also stepped into leadership as a Steward Pro Tempore, and ran proudly for Dorcas Queen, and joined the missionary ministry during Rev. Brown’s tenure—remaining an active member until her passing. Bettie faithfully attended conference and area meetings until her health no longer allowed, her last church title was that of “Church Mother.”

Bettie’s faith was a hands-on ministry. In her younger days, on almost any given day of the week, one could look into the sanctuary and find Bettie working side-by-side with Annie Myrtle Farrar and Helen Farrar, ensuring everything was clean, polished, and ready for Sunday service. She remained a dedicated pillar of the congregation until her health declined.

A quiet woman, Bettie possessed the rare gift of speaking volumes with very few words. She refused to let the worries of the world disrupt her peace; while others might fret or panic over life's hurdles, she remained the calm in the storm. Her famous, reassuring mantras were always: "Eh, it’ll be alright," "It will work itself out," and “What’s to be, Gon’ be.”

While known for her quiet grace, few knew the full depth of her artistry—she was a classically trained pianist with a beautiful soprano voice. Her love for music spanned genres, from classical masterpieces by Vivaldi and Mozart to performances by The Three Tenors and the powerful Negro Spirituals of the Tuskegee Gospel Choir.

Though Bettie did not have biological children, her maternal love was boundless. She played an instrumental, loving role in raising and nurturing her many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Because she always put others first, two of her nieces and a nephew decided it was time to turn the tables, throwing her a surprise birthday party to honor her because of the impact she has had on her family. The running joke around the church was whether anyone could actually convince the low-key "Ms. Bet" to show up! While most were betting she wouldn't attend, her family successfully got her there, resulting in a beautiful, celebration that created memories for all.

In her final days, Bettie found joy in the simple moments spent at home with her sisters. She loved sitting up until three o’clock in the morning with her sister Mattie, letting the TV watch them, and always looked forward to playfully verbally sparring with her sister Janet. Despite her frailty, her protective, loving spirit never wavered; she would still try to be the very first one up if she thought her sister Lucy needed anything at all.

On Monday evening, instead of her usual late-night routine, around 9:30, Bettie told her sister Janet that she was tired and ready for bed. The next morning, she got up just as she always did, but her earthly work was done, and she quietly entered into eternal rest.

Bettie was predeceased by her parents, William James Leach and Mary Jones Leach; her siblings, James Leach, Richard Leach, Thelma Commodore, Thomas Leach, and Willie Mae Leach Dawkins; her niece, Easter Farrar Bland; and her nephews, James Damone Leach, Sidney Commodore, Jr., and Phillip Mandela Dawkins.

Bettie leaves to cherish her memory her three beloved sisters: Mattie Myrie, Lucy Etheridge, and Janet Leach. She is also survived by her devoted nieces, Angela Commodore, Kimberly Commodore Bell, and Heather Leach; her loving nephews, Robert Bland (adopted), Ricky McKinney, Brian Myrie, Akhenaton Leach, and Keith Etheridge; and her precious great-nieces and great-nephews, Tanika Bland, Brittany Myrie, Neah Henry, Terry Angelo Bunn, Sidney Alexander Commodore, Aaron Myrie, Noah Myrie, Javon Etheridge, Solomon Leach, Judah Leach, and Joshua Leach, along with a host of other dear relatives, neighbors, and friends. Her legacy of calm, faith, and unconditional sisterly love will live on forever in the hearts of all who knew her.
