Barbara Swann Obituary

Barbara Jean Dorsett Swann, age 77 of 14053 McDougald Rd., Sanford, NC transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.

Mrs. Barbara Jean Dorsett Swann was born on April 4, 1943 to the late Amice and Pauline Dorsett in Lee   County, Sanford NC. She gained her Heavenly wings on May 31, 2020 at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Fayetteville, NC.

Barbara grew up attending New Hope Church, where she learned to love and serve God at an early age. Later in life, she met and married the late Earmon Swann.  To this union, three children were born.

Barbara attended Cameron Grove AME Zion Church for many years, where she served in several capacities. Years later, Barbara accepted God’s calling on her life as a minister.  She opened a Mission Center in Sanford NC, where she worked faithfully for the Lord until her health declined.  After which,  she continued to do ministry work in her home.

Barbara was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was always trying to help people and steer  them in the right direction. She did not mind witnessing God’s goodness to them.  She was a pillar of her community and she was known for her famous sweet potato pies.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant granddaughter, Azianna Swann.

Barbara leaves to cherish her memories two daughters, Patricia Swann Holland (Wallace) of Raleigh, NC and Dedra Taylor, who she raised from an early age of Myrtle Beach, SC; two sons, William Edward Swann of Cameron, NC and Tony Lee Swann of the home;  her goddaughter, Julia Buie, who she loved like her own. Barbara was blessed to have ten grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild, all whom she loved dearly.  Many of them she practically raised, as well. She was always babysitting her grandchildren and many years later, she continued to care for their children.  They all loved their “Grandma Barbara”.  Also, Barbara leaves to cherish her memories: two sisters, Bettie McLean and Roeina Cox, both of Sanford, NC; two brothers, William Dorsett of Sanford, NC and Oarn Dorsett (Hester) of New York; her special cousins, whom she called her “Durham Girls” and a host of loving nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was a blessing to the Swann/Dorsett family, and she will truly be missed.
