Alexander Alston Obituary

Mr. Alexander Alston, age73 of 700 Mitchell Chapel Church Rd., Pittsboro, NC, transitioned into eternal rest on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Durham VA Medical Center, Durham, NC.  

Alexander Alston, son of the late George and Mamie Alston was born on July 18, 1946 in Chatham County. He departed this life on Thursday, February 13, 2020 at Durham VA Health Care System in Durham, NC. He was fondly known as “Zander”, “Al” and “The Singing Man”

He joined Mitchell Chapel AME Zion Church at a young age. He was a member of the Male Chorus and Sunday School Department. He served as the President of the Voices of Praise, whom he loved dearly and worked tirelessly for. He was a lead singer and became known as “The Singing Man”. He also served on the Trustee Board as the secretary for many years. Under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Anthony J. Davis, he became an emeritus trustee when his health began to fail him.

Al served in the US Army in Vietnam as a Special Sergeant where he instructed new enlisted men. He was awarded several commendation medals. He retired from Liggett & Meyers Tobacco Company (Liggett Group) on July 19, 2013, where he was employed as the plant engineer for 45 years.

Zander was preceded in death by his son, Jermal, his parents, George and Mamie Alston, and his sister, Georgia Mae Alston.  

Keeping his memory alive and mourning his loss of life, his loving and dedicated wife of 51 ½ years Mary P. Alston; his daughter, Chreatha; grandsons, DéShawn and DeAundré and granddaughter, Jamilla. He also leaves to cherish his memory, goddaughter Chloe Sanders and godson Zack McClean; sisters:  Evangelist Josephine, Patricia, Carolyn (Rory), all of Durham, NC, and Renee (Shawn) of Herndon, VA; brother, Donald of Minneapolis, MN; sisters-in-law: Betty, Jean, Lois, and Ann( Tyrone); three loving aunts: Macie Hadley, Margaret Mangum and Gretchen Alston; a special niece, Marinetta Paige; special great-nieces: Candie Petty and Kristina Rivera; 2 favorite cousins: Barbara Link and Janet Alston; nephews:  Rodney, Cedric, Adrian, Terrell and Daniel; nieces: Renee, Angelia, Nakea, Shlonda, Imani and Mackenzie, as well as a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, friends and classmates.
