Shirley Mae Chalmers, age 74 of 24808 Hwy 24/27 Cameron, NC passed on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Central Carolina Hospital, Sanford, NC.
Shirley Mae Chalmers, daughter of Lillie Monroe and the late Joseph Monroe was born July 3, 1943. She exchanged this life on earth for one of eternal peace and rest on May 1, 2018 at Central Carolina Hospital.
She grew up in Harnett County and was a graduate of Johnsonville High School under C.L. Powell. She was the valedictorian of the class of 1961. While in school she participated in the Glee Club and played basketball. She also furthered her education at Winston-Salem State and Fayetteville State University.
Sister Shirley’s spiritual discipleship began at Pilgrim’s Rest Church under the leadership of Elder Robert Brewer and Evangelist Perry Hester. She served in the capacities of church secretary and choir president. Later she joined True Gospel UCOG under the leadership of Bishop Samuel Wright. She was a faithful member until her health began to fail. She held on to her faith until the very end.
Shirley was married to the late Rufus D. Chalmers and to this union two children were born, Kemp and Carolyn. She loved to volunteer at the Bread Basket in Sanford, NC. She also loved shopping and wearing her fancy hats.
She was preceded in death by two siblings, Lowell McGilvery and Carolyn J. Monroe.
Shirley leaves to cherish her memories: her loving son, Kemp Chalmers (Mi Troung) of San Diego, CA, and Carolyn Chalmers of the home; her beloved mother, Lillie Monroe of Olivia, NC; one sister, Carolyn F. Monroe of Olivia, NC; three brothers, Ernest L. Monroe (Betty) of Olivia, NC, Joseph W. Monroe of Sanford, NC and Ronnie G. Monroe (Tomara) of Winston Salem, NC; three grand-children, Kemp Chalmers Jr., Philip Chalmers, and Kristen Brown; one great grandson, Kaison Brown; one sister-in-law, Sylvia McCrimmon (Hermon); two uncles-in-law, Lonell and Edward Smith of Cameron, NC; one aunt-in-law, Evelyn Weathers of Cameron, NC; two godchildren, Jamita Taylor and Ryan Belk; one god sister, Sandra Farrow (Michael) a very special friend, Rachel Sellars and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
